I'm not a ref hater, but I thought this was interesting.

Quite often it can be the opposite. We had MAC refs in Pittsburgh a couple weeks back.

I don't think Hoeppner will get much sympathy on the throw-away. Receiver in the area, to me, means legal. Also, the guy on the sideline...is that the rule: autmatic penalty? I confess I'm not savvy on some of the finer legalities.
The other plays...well, holding is often in the eye of the...officials. The remaining four calls...I'd be VERY interested in hearing a response.
Let me finish by saying that split-crew officiating is probably the best compromise, and this should be reinstated.

Actually a neutral crew from a third conference would be the optimal solution. Unfortunately that's probably not workable during the regular season, but it sure seems to take care of a lot of fan gripes, real and imagined, during the bowls.
That reminds me... it's just like yesterday remembering a play in a game CMU had at Virginia several years ago. The Cavs had a third and long and one of their players clearly jumped forward about a second before the snap. It happened right in front of a referee, not to mention the CMU fans. As the play progressed, it went for a touchdown, but we figured it would be called back. Boy were we pissed! I'll never forget one Chip fan hollering to the guy, "You'll never ref in the NFL!!", followed by a second person, "Hell, you'll never ref in the MAC"!

Seaking of bad calls...I still remember the 1991 CMU-Toledo tilt in the Glass Bowl, televised by PASS Sports. Near the end of the game, CMU's Ken Ealy caught a pass in the back of the end zone. Replay showed very clearly that he had possession and not one but TWO feet down inbounds...right in front of an official with a clear view. The call? OUT OF BOUNDS!!! On fourth down, we settled for a game-tying FG and would go on to tie the NCAA record for ties in a season (four). Gotta love those MAC refs...
