In our sixth installment of CMU recruiting prospects, we move to the defensive side of the ball. One of the key areas for CMU to recruit for the Class of 2003 is the defensive line. First of all, we'll focus on some fo the top DT prospects in Michigan.

1) Tim Smith (6-4, 285, 4.9) of Ypsilanti - Will be a three-year varsity starter. Very strong and agile, moves well for his size. Another fine prospect from a school that has produced a number of blue-chippers recently. Most likely will receive Big Ten offers but would be a prize MAC recruit.

2) Demetrius Russell (6-3, 290, 5.0) of Grand Rapids Union - One of the top prospects coming out of Grand Rapids this year. Great size and strength. Russell is a product of the same school as CMU All-MAC DT Calvin Massenberg (1994-97). Russell is a prime CMU target and a top MAC recruit.

3) Desmond Gray (6-5, 285, 5.0) of Detroit Cass Tech - Will be a three-year varsity starter. Good size and strength. Known suitors include a host of BCS and MAC schools.

4) Sam Williams (6-4, 265, 4.9) of Saginaw - If college scouts get a chance to look past the Trojans big three this year (Lamarr Woodley, Jerome Jackson and Anthony Jr. Rogers) they'll see Williams, another fine Div. I-A sleeper prospect like Tory Humphrey last season. Williams would look great joining Humphrey wearing the Maroon and Gold of CMU.

5) Bubba Gritter (6-1, 290, 5.1) of Grandville - Very strong and athletic. A two-time defending state heavyweight wrestling champion, Gritter is a top MAC prospect. He will be very difficult to wrestle away from WMU, which seems to have a lock on the Grandville pipeline.

6) Mike Zelinski (6-2, 260, 4.9) of Montrose - A tough, physical player with good quickness, Zelinski is a sleeper MAC prospect from a respected high school program.
