Went to the Kent/Urbana basketball game today at the MAC Center. It was a very good day for the Flashes as it should have been playing an NAIA team.

The Flashes D was impressive as they came up with steal after steal and frustrated the Urbana offense. As expected, Gates had a nice game as did Wilkins who has turned into one heck of a 3-point shooter. But, since the score was 57-22 at halftime, most of the second half was played by the bench. Here were some observations of the freshmen:

DeAndre Haynes - scored only 5 points but clearly is unbelievably mature for his age. While only scoring 5 points, he continously penetrated to the basket and dished off to the open man. He is a slick ball-handler and is very quick...this guy is going to be a real treat to watch for the next 4 years.

Cliff Brown - this guy is ATHLETIC! I think he scored 11 points total and had alot of rebounds (not sure how many). He had a nice game and has some nice hops. He'll be fun to watch too....

Chris Williams - hadn't seen this guy play til' today. He had a few 3 pointers and some nice no look passes....he looks very comfortable out on the floor as well.

Coming into this game I didn't have much of a feeling for this team...but after today, I think this team will be way better than expected. I know it was only vs. Urbana but the Flashes didn't seem to care. They played tenacious Flashes D and executed very well on the offensive end. In my opinon, success starts with the point guard and we have a dandy in this Haynes kid...I can't wait for the next home game vs. SMS.

For those of you who didn't make the game....hope this helps you out a little.

Go Flashes! 04-cheers

Per ESPN Box Score:

Attendance: 3,042

Nice showing for a Sunday afternoon up against pro-football and a sub-par opponent. Hopefully it will be even better for solid programs like SMSU.

About like I expected, but great to hear about the freshmen!
A reminder for the Urbana players why they aren't going to Div. I schools...
SW Missouri has been to the dance more than a lot of MAC teams--good test.

Great all around effort, but what was the point of that? I don't get why they keep scheduling teams like that to open up. A practice would have better prepared them for the season than, the win dosn't even count in any chance at an at larg bid or NIT, and someone could have gotten hurt. I can understand wanting to play a cupcake to open up, but can't we just bring in a bad team from the MAAC or NEC instead?
