I know you probably have beat this subject up over here, but what are you thoughts on the marketing department, or lack of it. Just wondering.

Personally, I am thinkin about faxing my resume over, I couldn't do a worse job. Most of it has to deal with that every 5 minutes Akron has a commercial on TV or Radio in NE Ohio, and I could probably count on one hand how many times I have heard a Kent State Commercial, ON ANYTHING in the last year. This really isn't just limited to basketball. It goes for all sports, we have nationally ranked wrestling and gymnastic teams right now. Never hear anything about that. Kind of sad. They really need to start tryin. I really think will a little effort we could have a Xavier or Wake Forest type of basketball program. And minus football (there is always next year) We have a lot of DAMN good sports team here at Kent State.

O' well, that is my rant, sorry

To answer your question:

No, they don't! Really, they fired Sefner before football season and to my knowledge have not replaced him. Nice effort after an Elite 8 run, eh! Stupid arses!

In my opinion, sefner should have been let go. He was no good. He certainly could not do play by play on radio so that anyone knew which way the ball was moving. That went for FB and BB.

If you really want the job, do not make yourself look competent. If you do, the AD will not want you around. You might present some good ideas and heaven forbid, take credit for them. There is only room for ideas from one source at KSU.

I know this has been reviewed on the ESPN board, so pardon me if my opinion is just a repeat from that site.

I am really not being sarcatsic, but what do we want a Marketing department to do? Winning is the best marketing. So Akron has lots of commercials on TV in Northeastern Ohio. Big deal. Who draws more to a hoops home game - the Flashes or the Zips? (I know the answer to that- but look it up.) When was the last time anyone went to a CAVS game because they saw a commercial? I am a Kent grad, transplanted Ohioan, now living in Chicago. Trust me, the Bulls have TONS on "marketing" now, but they can't get any crowds. On the other hand, University of Illinois hoops has NO MARKETING but sells out every game with waiting lists.

Do we want more TV games? Sure. But what "TV?" Big deal if we get more Northeastern Ohioans and plus a few very few nuts like me who are willing to pay extra fees for Fox Sports Ohio. Frankly, KSU vs. Western Michigan during the regualr season is not going to win any ratings sweep outside of narrow fans bases already following those teams. The TV exposure that counts is the national exposure like ESPN and the NCAA coverage - which we are getting through winning! Bracket Buster is a huge win on a national basis. Another run in March will put us in the same camp as Gonzaga, Tulsa and Creighton; they get exposure just because of consistent March runs, then the national fan base starts to expect them to be good and take them seriously. No one will take us more seriously because of a few more games against MAC teams on Fox Sports Ohio.

Frankly, given the financial staights of most state universities, I would be happy if KSU spent no money on marketing for its teams and added the same money to what it spends on coaches, trainers, 5th year scholarships, weight rooms, and athletic facilities. Get great coaches, decent facilities, good athletes and the rest will take care of itself. Let the other schools play comercials to get 2,000 fans to a game.

Thansk for letting me rant. I know you care about the program or you wouldn't care about more exposure.

Good rant, FlashFan!
And right on the money! (Pun intended 03-wink )
You are exactly right. TV, radio and newspaper ads are not going to get more people to the games. You need to win on the national scene and the money takes care of itself.

Hey, axeme, thanks for giving us the scoop about this site on the ESPN board. The only person I can talk about the Flashes to up here is my spouse. It's getting a little old, I think.

Hi i am new to this board, looks like a lot of good stuff though. A comment on the winning and exposure, I read a statistic that out of state application has gone up as much as 18% from last year and much of this credited to the success of the basketball team. The things that the basketball team are doing is helping the university more than any amount of marketing could do.

My problem is not so much the lack of commercials promiting the team, it; the fact taht on any given night, I can't see this team on TV. The school could have inked a deal with one of the local TV stations in Cleveland to show some games. It has been so nice to see the Games on Fox the last couple of days. It sucks because my works schedule keeps me from going to more games even though I still live in the area.
