It's funny, I thought the same thing when Taft announced the council to look at "duplication and redundencies" in higher education. Kinda hard to justfy two state schools fo the same size so close together. I'm sure others will get sick over the idea, but has some possibilities.
Then we'll say we always liked you, Zippy. :)

Both of our attendence records suck....maybe we should join schools...think about THAT!! I mean...we're so darn close..its kind of ridiculous...just join schools...we'd be a powerhouse!!! We'd be OSU rivals!

Flash,
No doubt, this is hard to stomach. Lots of Mallox (sp?) will be chewed if this ever happens. The Zips? We'd marry the Zips? Yuuchhh...
But look at it...two state supported schools within 20 (okay, 30) minutes of each other, about the same size, both supporting two adminstrations, two athletics departments, two Colleges of Education, Business, Liberal Arts, and on and on. Then, figure in CSU and YSU and there is lots of overlap. Plus, this baby boomlet will be out of college by 2007, and both will be facing declining enrollment due to declining population again unless Kent can keep the reputation and enrollment boosts up.
The bonus is that the infastructure exists to make it work... put the undergrads at Kent in a college town, college environment, lots of room to expand and the Grad/Professional schools of U of A with an urban environment, closer to Cleveland and grads aren't looking for college dorm housing, anyway. ( Just don't **uck around with Ray's and the Loft!)
The biggest reason why this probably won't happen is that it does make some sense...it would have to get through Columbus and there are many that won't let the crown jewel be threatened. I don't know how the other state schools would feel.
Have to wait to see what this new commission recommends. Just have seen the code words or "redundency" and "duplication" too much to not be suspicous.
In the meantime, I hate the Zips.
What does this have to do with the East Side Stands? Beats me.

What would it be called? Kent/Akron State U.? Univ. of Akron/Kent? Northeast Ohio State U.?
Team name? I think it would have to be the Golden Zips. At least the colors wouldn't be a problem. The adorable Zippy must remain as mascot!
They could build a fast monorail between the campuses, then it's 10 minutes or less to go from one to the other.
Kent would get an Engineering College and Law School. Akron would get...??? Oh, yeah, the LCD Institute which would actually go well with Polymer Science. Plus field hockey
The combined football program would still not come close to rivalling Ohio State (Toledo, maybe). Most other sports would kick some ar$e.
Even if they never merge the universities I could see the benefits of a combined football program: increased attendance, cost savings, Title IX compliance, removal of Dix stadium, etc.
It's not as far fetched as it may seem. Just sign here...

Just some responses.........
1. Golden Knight - The previous East Side Stands (visitors sideline) were wooden bleachers that had become increasingly warped and unsafe over the years. These bleachers were removed previous to last season and construction has begun for a new permanent seating area, reportedly to be ready by the home opener this season.
2. Am I the only person that actually likes Dix Stadium? I think it's a great place to watch a football game. Yeah, maybe the lack of attendence is cause for the negativity surrounding the stadium, but that aside, you can't get any closer to the action on the field than at Dix. No track, plenty of seating (haha), and, from most seats, you look out over the fall foilage of the surrounding area. I love it.
Also, I have one request for this new east side. Please, please provide an area for a "#1" camera on this side. The Marshall game looked so bad on TV last year with no seats as a backdrop to the action. While I'm sure the new stands will look better, a shot of the larger west side, regardless of attendence, will look a little better.
Looking forward to football season......

Of all of the problems associated of with Flashes football, I'll agree that Dix Stadium is the least of them.

Say,
Just an innocent bystander here in NYC. Forget about combining the schools, BUT what about building one stadium for both teams to use? Kind of like Giants Stadium. One new dome (as hinted at on the Zips site) to be enjoyed by both teams. Cut costs in half and gets fans in the area excited. Even have the occasional college football double header.
Just a thought for our economic times.
