I'm not sure I like it. I applaud Akron for reaching out to the community, but I don't like this event.

Here's why: It could be interpreted as saying, "Hey you young black students, look to the HBCU's because the Ohio university system can't accommodate you. We want to emphasize this point by highlighting this particular game."

I'm generally not opposed or critical of the HBCU's, but it continues the racial divide by highlighting an event like this, for a school (Howard) that has no ties to the area.

If Howard wants to play Spelman for a special game in Cleveland...I think that's a different situation. More power to them.

A sleight of hand trying disguise this game as having some significance against one of the worst football teams in the country in D1A or AA (ranked 215 out of 240) rather than play the logical and obvious opponent and draw a LARGE crowd--Youngstown--because Owens can't beat them.

The Zips were scheduled to play YSU this season. YSU backed out, preferring to play Kent. They didn't want to play 2 1-A games. In the future YSU / Akron will not be possible due to the 11 game seasons and the stipulation that you must play 5 D 1-A home games.

Quote:The excitement from the game in the Rubber Bowl is expected to carry over even after the final gun sounds as the "Battle of the Bands," presented by Subway will commence once the contest ends. The UA Marching Band, the HU "Showtime" Marching Band and the Central State (Ohio) Marching Marauders will square off during a postgame celebration.

The Akron Band is soooo going to get dissed... Howard and Central State Marching Bands have definitely got the groove goin'... I've seen both and they do rock.

It will be a shame if the remnants of the hurricane screw up that game. Supposed to be a great crowd.

Not to play the he said/she said game, but YSU fans don't have that info or impression.

Hey The Flash.

10,000 + plus fans for an 0 - 2 Zips team is a big crowd. All the fans but 400 - 500 were Zips fans. Yea you guys had 20,000+ for your game but how many were YSU fans???? Let's see how many come the rest of the season from and under .500 Kent team.

Oh BTW you guys almost lost the game anyway. Yea you might have palyed the game of your life vs. Akron but come see me in Nov. when your in the MAC East basement looking up at the Zips.

Note:

I am not the one crowing about how great my marketing dept is when you can only draw 10K. KSU's marketing blows. We know it and acknowledge it. We don't make grand statements when the proof is in the numbers that it is not exactly true.

BTW, we still have scoreboard 41-38!

04-bow

Clearly the most delusional fans in the MAC. At least you are #1 in SOMETHING.
Our team is really not very good this year. We are better than you guys, though. We don't need any spin, or comparison of losses or attendance. We settled it on the field, like you are supposed to.
You must have turned the radio off after you got stuffed at the goal line in Madison. You almost scored, you did not almost win the game. In case you hadn't heard, the final score was 48-31! Even if you had scored, your defense still gave up 14 more points.

And MAC East Championship? Huh?

You guys kill me!

Have you seen your defense? You make our defense look good, and that's not easy. Sure made our offense look good, too. Believe me, Youngstown is a better team than Akron.

Good luck with Howard this week! Don't overlook them with Buffalo coming up next week!

The YSU game is true. I can only tell you that I know it is a fact. The new Marketing group at Akron is all about putting butts in the seats. YSU at the Rubber Bowl is a no-brainer 20k game. Unfortuately 2003 was the last year it was possible, and YSU elected to play Kent.

You are correct...in the mid 90's, during the end-of-Faust/beginning of Owens Era, the Zips dodged YSU. We sucked then as bad as Buffalo does now. Didn't make too much sense to play them. Can't say I blame the University.

CaptK, you and olzip deserve some kind of award for living with the insanity some of your fellow fans spew around the boards.
You have my sympathy.
You ought to :chair:
or 03-nutkick some of them.

Kent played well against the Zips and were lucky to get away with a win - and I think their fans know it too. Had our defense been AVERAGE...the Zips would have won that one.

But on topic, our marketing has done a fantastic job, I think.

10,000+ last week, but cmon.....I mean, nobody wants to see Eastern Michigan play anyways....lol

Yeah, you'd be undefeated every season if you didn't lose so much.

There was NOTHING "lucky" about driving 3 scores down the throat of your defense in the last 6 minutes. There was NOTHING "lucky" about stuffing your fanstasic offense (that doesn't seem to score when they really need to) 3 and out twice in row in the last 4 minutes.. 04-rock
How many times do we have to go over this? Are you making a bid to be the sorest losers in the conference? You ought to take a lesson from the Marshall fans this week. "Congratulations. The better team won and deserved to. We'll get you bastards next time." Is that so hard? Kent fans were universally complimentary about your team after the game. But it wasn't, as one of your fans called it a few days ago, a "virtual tie," whatever the hell that is. We won.
You don't have to try to run us down to say something about your team--their performances speak for themselves. You can make your statements in Oxford and Huntington.
Sheesh!

If wishes were dollars, then you'd be rich Zippie. Luck had nothing to do with it. It had everything to do with our defense stepping, your Coach blowing his play calls, your defense sucking, and our star player stepping up down the strech. Give it a rest. We have been fairly gracious about this, but cut the crap. We win one out of the last what 8 and you guys can't handle it. Your myopia (look it up) is ridiculous!
