Charlie Frye vs. #3 Iowa (2002, a MUCH better Iowa team)
FIRST HALF STATS: 21-29 230 yds. 2 TDs, 0 INTs
Ben Roethlisberger vs. Iowa 2003
GAME STATS: 27-42 250 yds. 0 TD, 4 INTs
How bout those stats? Yup, Krispy Kreme all right. He had better first half stats then Ben did whole game stats, against a MUCH MUCH MUCH better Iowa team than this years.
Gosh, by all mean, let's compare one half of your guy's results from a game last season, versus a whole game against a team from a year later. Especially when we have stats for the same two subjects from the same year....
Ben Roethlisberger vs Iowa, 2002: 33-51-1-343 (29-24 loss)
Charlie Frye vs Iowa, 2002: 21-29-0-230 (57-21 loss)
Yeah, Charlie had a great half before he got knocked out of the game. Of course, by the time Charlie got on the board, Iowa had 37 points and were playing their backups. So unfortunately, not only will we never know how much damage Charlie could do against Iowa's second- and third-stringers in a game where Akron was never in it, we'll never know how he would have done facing Iowa's full defensive intensity.
No, Ben's passing percentage wasn't quite as hot for an entire game as Frye's were for a half game, but Ben kept his team in the game and had a chance to beat the team that completely dominated Akron a week earlier. And that, I think, is where Ben is a better QB. He keeps his teams in games and gives them a chance to win.
At any rate, if I were a Zippy fan, I would be concerned about Frye's ability to take a hit. He's been taken out of at least two games because of injuries -- that 2002 Iowa game, and this year's Miami game. NFL guys don't care to take chances on injury-prone QBs....
As for the Krispy Kreme comment, that was meant, in its entirety, about this year's schedule. That has nothing to do with Akron's losses last year. You have played three ABYSMAL teams this season, two good teams, and a schizophrenic Kent team. There is a reason why Sagarin has rated your schedule #136 at this point in the season. How is that anything more than a gooey, sugary pastry?
