Trojans Complete First Day of Practice
Ricky Hazel 08/06/2005

TROY, Ala. – The Troy University football squad completed its first practice of five in shorts to start training camp for the 2005 season Saturday evening.

The Trojans worked out for three full hours at Movie Gallery Veterans Stadium with the NCAA maximum 105 players. That group included 24 signees, 19 first year walk-ons and 63 returning players who were on campus for spring practice.

"We have an awful lot of young guys here this year and it will take some time for them to know where they need to be and what to expect out here," Trojans coach Larry Blakeney said. "We had a lot of really good meetings leading up to today’s practice and we have a lot of guys who are focused on working hard and getting better."

Among the new players working out for the first time in a Troy jersey were seven quarterbacks. Junior college signee Larry Dockery and freshman signee Julian Foster were joined by five walk-ons, all vying for the back-up spot behind junior Carl Meadows.

"Even though Carl doesn’t have a lot of playing time for us, he know this offense and we have a lot of confidence in him and his ability," Blakeney said. "We hope that all of those young guys will sort themselves out pretty quickly so that we can focus on getting one or two ready to play if and when we need them."

The Trojans will continue with meetings on Sunday before hitting the practice field Sunday evening at 5:30 p.m. for their second session in shorts. The first practice in full pads is scheduled for Wednesday, August 10.
