I don't view this as a "firing of Lee Owens".
I see it as a "big move" by an AD and Staff who have seen successful D1A Football programs up close, and made the decision (with the support of Dr. Proenza) to try and put a more experienced and potentially more successful "group" in place at Akron.
It is not a personal move. Please everyone, get off the gloss "Lee was fired".
Tons of money are being poured into UA's Football Program, and they feel now is the time to spend some money on Coaching and Admin.

Ahh that's crap. It won't get any better with a NEW coach and a NEW system and NEW players...its like an NFL expansion team - its not gonna win when ya start over.

Obviously it WAS personal - who fires a coach that was 7-5?
Sure you can say.."We wanted to step up and do better than 7-5...like we've done it our entire lives every season...because hell we're akron...the football powerhouse of ohio!!!"
or
"Owens can't do better than 7-5...so we'll fire him and start all over from scratch and maybe 10 years later...we can win 8 games instead of 7."
gimmie a break....it was PERSONAL - even the Kent fans realize it.

Maybe Owens got axed because Akron wants to be more than a 3rd place team in the MAC East.
Maybe Owens got axed because his teams fall behind 21-3 and 21-0 to abysmal teams in the last weeks of the season. Coming back to barely beaat crap is not a noteworthy achievement.
Owens is gone, we not move ahead to bigger and better things.

Yes,
I don't believe the AD looked at this season only.
If LO had winning seasons year in, and year out, he wouldn't of been fired.
While they were 7-5 this year, 2 of those wins were against D1AA teams.
Whether Poly is a good D1AA team, or not, doesn't matter.
They are D1AA. They had the weakest strength of schedule in D1, and still finished 7-5.
They didn't beat anyone with a winning record.
This is a pattern. Every year they lose when they shouldn't lose.
And although they have had some upsets, they were very few over a 9 year period.
We have a loser mentality here. Some consider 7-5 a successful season.
I know this isn't OSU, or ND, or Oklahoma, but 7-5 isn't a good season at most schools. Here some of us treat it like it's awesome.
7-5 after a couple of good years won't get you fired.
7-5 with a weak SOS, and losing records previous seasons will
I agree, they won't be any better next year, or probably the year after.
But within 3 years we should start seeing a difference.
The new coach will not have an abundance of talent to start with.
I'm sure some of the existing players will quit, or transfer.
LO has had 9 years. He has greatly improved the academics, the system, and the values of the program. However, the performance on the field is still lacking.
You are a great defender of LO with both of your internet names. obviously for personal reasons. Also, it's obvious there are some parents on this board too.
However, if you take off your LO colored glasses, you will see this is for the betterment of the program.
We just all need to hope they make the right decision on the new coach.
