Trojans Open Season with 27-10 Win Over Cal Poly
09/03/2005

Troy jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the first quarter, and the defense held Cal Poly scoreless in the second half to lead the Trojans to a 27-10 win in their season opener Saturday night at Movie Gallery Stadium.

Joel Whinghter capped a five-play, 62-yard drive with a 15-yard touchdown run on Troy’s first possession of the game. Greg Whibbs’ kick gave Troy (1-0) a 7-0 lead with 11:18 left in the first quarter.

Four plays later, Cal Poly (0-1) faked a punt on fourth-and-14, but Troy’s Brannon Condren brought down Mustangs quarterback John Mende for a loss of one, giving the Trojans possession at the Cal Poly 15. Whibbs gave the Trojans a 10-0 lead with a 34-yard field goal with 3:20 remaining in the quarter.

Facing fourth-and-six from their own 24, the Mustangs attempted another fake punt on their next possession. Troy’s Johnny Faulk brought down Tim Chicoine for a loss of six, giving Troy the ball inside the Cal Poly 20 for the second straight possession. The Trojans capitalized six plays later when Kenny Cattouse scored on a four-yard run, putting Troy up 17-0 with 3:20 left in the quarter.

“I was surprised, but I was glad it happened.
