Just heard that our AD extended Pees contract for another year which takes it to 2007, I think. I do not know about this move. My gut says no. 03-banghead

From Kent's Web site:

Pees' Contract Extended through 2006 Season

Dec. 2, 2003

KENT, Ohio --- The contract of Kent State University head football coach Dean Pees has been extended one year through the 2006 season, KSU Director of Athletics Laing Kennedy announced Tuesday (Dec. 2).

Pees has led the Golden Flashes to 14 wins in the last three seasons, which is as many as they had in the entire previous decade (1991-2000). Kent State won two of its last three games this past season to finish with a 5-7 overall record and a 4-4 mark in the Mid-American Conference. Both victory totals are the program

There are only two reasons why I can figure for an extension:

1. Laing wants to retire by the end of '06 and doesn't want the hassle of a head coach search. Probably wants the new AD to bring in his own guy, which he likely will. I think this is the real reason.

2. They won't get a quality DC if he thinks Dean is only gonna be around another year. Three years with the same head gut could give some re-assurance. This is true with Martin, too, and we know the offense has improved.

The people on this board got me comfortable with giving Dean another year, through '04. It's reasonable to say it's Cribbs last year, give him another shot, etc. I'd much rather we waited to see what Dean can do next year before extending him. BTW, he's already talking about "no more excuses" in '04. Have we heard this before?

Good thanks! They are planning radiation treatment of 2500 rads that will be given in 16 fractions (or days) using anterior and posterior fields to the periaortic area. Because treatments are not given on weekends, my wife and I will probably not be able to make it back to Mentor, Ohio for Christmas this year.

However, I am looking forward to watching Miami and BG in their respective bowl games. Also hoping Kent will keep up its winning ways in basketball.

Enjoyed listening to tonight's game on Eastern's radio network.

Thanks again for asking.

Go Kent!!!

The Flashes put up some impressive points on some teams that nobody else in the
conference could do (Miami, and BG); it almost makes you think what could have been
if we had any kind of defense.

I think Laing Kennedy is thinking long term effects of keeping Dean around; mainly keeping
the stability of the program intact. The Flashes should be just about impossible for anyone
in the conference to stop next year with a healthy Cribbs, who now is set with Doug Martin's
offense....................and I believe we may get back Alston for one more year ----Does anyone
have info on Alston's situation?

If Dean can get the D. coordinator needed to fix this teams mental state, and we have most
of the D. back the Flashes WILL COMPETE for a MAC TITLE. ----- Just in time too, as we need
15,000 + per game.
:D

Quote:``If I had fired Dean, I would have had 40 kids protesting at my office,'' said Kennedy. ``We talk to the seniors at the end of each season, and they really respect Dean and like him very much. I took that into account, too. I see him helping to improve their lives.''
Kennedy said every season in which Pees has a .500 or better record in the MAC, another year is added to the coach's contract. That assumes things go well on the academic and behavioral fronts.

I believe that this says it all. Can anyone else see from this quote that .500 is our goal. That makes our AD happy and that is all he will get. I have said many times that if you are not knowledgeable enough or capable of hiring a better coach, keep what you have until an AD comes along who is not a x-hockey player from Canada. Our coach is a nice person and that is worth something, but I would like a winner.

BTW, this principle was certainly lost at Zipperland. They fired a nice man, who was not a bad or good coach, and I will bet that they do not hire a better coach. Look at OU in basketball, they fire a good BB coach and hire a terrible coach for twice the money. Like I say, if an AD does not have the inside on a great coach in the making, then stay where you are.
