Charleston shot splendidly at Appalachian State Saturday and despite the absence of three players -- two starters -- won 108-96. It was ASU's first home loss in 13 games this season. One of the players has been kicked off the team and the other two are on an indefinite leave from the team.

But boy did Charleston have players step it up. Bernard Jackson came off the bench to score 15 and AJ Harris, who had scored 58 points in his four-year CAREER prior to Saturday, hit for 10, including two three pointers. Charleston hit 12 treys and 30 of 38 free throws, even though they are the worst FT shooting team in the conference. Kudos.

The better team won, but I will comment on the officiating. The officials missed three charge calls. Two went against App and one against Charleston. Charleston's players were throwing a lot of elbows, but seldom were fouls called. We would have lost anyway because Charleston was the better team Saturday for sure, but I thought the officiating was terrible.

The Cougars did a fantastic job on Shawn Hall, who was limited to four first-half points. He was 2 of 13 from 3 point land and finished with 27, thanks to many free throws.

ASU still has a one game lead in the North on ETSU and Davidson, but is in a precarious position. The Mountaineers could easily lose at Wofford Monday night. Then Davidson comes to town next Saturday. Next Monday we're at UNC-G (should win there) and finish on the road at ETSU.

In other words, ASU, despite being in first, could easily fall to third in the North and thus have to play a Wednesday game in the tournament. They are all must-wins from here on out.

I was Fancher's worst critic for a while, but now I think Fancher could have taken the CofC team and run ASU slap out of the gymn. Just wish he could recruit as well.
