Safety, Security Concerns Prompt Auburn to Make Tailgating Changes
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Friday, June 12, 2002
AUBURN, Ala. (AP) -- Auburn fans will still be able to park their recreational vehicles and fire up the barbecue grills before football games this fall, just not in some of the usual venues.
The university is moving RV parking away from Jordan-Hare Stadium and adding 1,650 on-campus parking spaces for this season, citing vandalism incidents the past few seasons and safety concerns over the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
"We have to do more to ensure the safety and security of everyone on campus in all situations while maintaining our football game traditions," said Auburn President William F. Walker.
Auburn said the insurance industry has identified football stadiums as higher-risk facilities and asked schools to develop information on disaster preparedness and measures for controlling loss.
Auburn's changes include:
Six organized parking areas for vehicles, including two specifically for RVs. A new shuttle service will take fans that park on South Donahue Drive near the Ham Wilson Arena to the stadium.
The central part of campus -- bounded by Magnolia Avenue, College Street, Samford Avenue and Donahue Street -- will be RV-free, creating additional space for tailgaters in that area.
Fans won't be allowed to use stakes, ribbons or other measures to reserve tailgating spots until after 4 p.m. the day before the game.
Hot-charcoal containers for fan use and nine modular restrooms will be placed around campus.
All but 17 academic and administrative buildings and facilities will be locked on game day.
The university has received about 150 phone calls and e-mails from fans about the changes, and "95 percent of the people have been very understanding and supportive, "spokeswoman Janet McCoy said.
"Most of them have been about specific questions, just wanting reassurances they're still going to be able do what they've done," McCoy said. "And in fact, they are. The changes are very simple and won't affect the majority of tailgaters."

Yeah, don't see where it'll be a big deal...anything that help the parking sounds good but I don't see that helping.

As far as the parking and tailgating changes, it sounds like a positive change for a "common man" like me. There is plenty of room for the "land yachts" in the parking lots. Man, I need to score some tickets!
In just over a month and a half, we get to hobble the Trojan horse! I can't wait!
