Sanford Stadium Project Won't Be Ready for Georgia Opener

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Friday, June 12, 2002

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) -- Work at the University of Georgia's Sanford Stadium has fallen behind schedule and will not be completed in time for football season.
The construction delay is on the $15 million Gate 6 project, which includes concessions, rooms for booster clubs, restrooms and a pedestrian plaza on one end of the stadium.

The project will not be finished in time for Georgia's first home football game against Clemson on Aug. 31, but it should not disrupt any games.

"Hopefully, the major impact may be visual as much as anything," said Claude Felton, UGA's associate athletic director.

The area will look like a construction site, but a new, larger entryway and access ramp, which are already completed, will improve access to the stadium at Gate 6, Felton said.

The project was delayed when workers found loose soil while preparing the foundation for the site. The soil turned out to be one of the small landfills that dot the campus, campus architect Danny Sniff said.

Felton said it took construction workers a long time to clean up the area and establish footings for the structure. He said the project should be completed by the end of September.

Two points, there are approx. a dozen gates, this is just one of them. It would have little effect on ingress and egress into the stadium. Second point, it now appears it WILL be done by opening day. A lot has changed since that article was written a month a half ago.
