Uga VI goes to Washington for Georgia reception

Associated Press

Savannah -- A dog is the guest of honor at a University of Georgia reception this week in Washington.

The school mascot, Uga VI, gets top billing for the reception for Georgia congressmen Tuesday -- beating out the school's athletics director and football coach for the honor.

A private jet will fly Uga VI to Washington with athletics director Vince Dooley and football coach Mark Richt.

"Uga is always first," Dooley said. "I'm used to it. I'm just lucky to be that high on the list beneath Uga."

The beloved white bulldog will be escorted by his owner, Savannah lawyer Sonny Seiler, who promised Uga will be wearing a brand-new football jersey. The dog has to look his best to rub furry elbows with high-powered Georgia grads like Republican Sen. Phil Gramm of Texas.

"That's pretty high cotton for a dog, isn't it?" Seiler said. "I don't know how we're going to get his spiked collar past all of that heightened security."

The visit is Uga VI's first trip to Washington, but politics comes easy for the famed line of bulldogs.

Former Georgia Sen. Sam Nunn once walked the mascot around Sanford Stadium during a campaign year and received a standing ovation.

"The cheers were more for the dog than for Sam, but he got a lot of mileage out of it," said owner Sonny Seiler. "But you want to know the irony of it all? Sam Nunn went to Georgia Tech."

A coffee table book chronicling the home life and travels of all the Uga mascots is due out in the fall. "Damn Good Dogs," written partly by Seiler, will include a mention of Uga VI's upcoming trip to Washington.

Well, UGA's trip is ok with me provided....

He takes some leaks on the doors of Rep. Gary Condit, Sen. Ted Kennedy, Sen. Tom Daschle, Rep. **** Gephardt, and Rep. Earl Hilliard.

If he does that, I'm ok with the trip.
