87-74 NIU secures their 9th consecutive win against EMU. I believe Todd had 31 points, just demolishes his previous carreer high.

What was most impressive about his evening was he actually attacked the basket several times and he got several key rebounds. An all-around great effort from Todd. Happy b-day!! 04-bow

Todd Peterson and I went to the same high school. Pekin High School - home of the Dragons.

Interesting tid-bit. When I was in the 5th grade in 1980, Pekin changed their mascot to the Dragons from the Chinks. Yes. Chinks. A slang term for a China man. Crazy stuff.

I was very impressed with Peterson tonight. Not because he scored 31, but because he was headed for a very average night when he turned it around.

Usually automatic from the line, TP missed a couple free throws in the first half. At one point, he was out rebounded on a play he had position on and I thought it just wasn't his night. I just thought he was off. Then he comes out firing in the second half. It was huge. Not only did he take the lead back from EMU, he wrestled the momentum back and set our team back into the right mode. EMU never really contended after that.

FC, good point about him attacking the basket. Judson said after the game that he challenged Peterson before the game to become a more complete player tonight. Interesting.

Peterson's line:
9-12 (FG-FGA) 6-9 (FG-FGA) 7-11 (FT-FTA) 3 (OF) 4 (DE) 7 (TOT-rebs) 3 (PF) 31 (TP) 1 (A) 0 (TO) 0(BLK) 1 (S) 35 (MIN)

Other notes:
- I thought McKinney had a great game too. 14 Points 10 Rebs for the double-double.
- NIU got off to a huge lead, but they let EMU get back into. Same old story. Just didn't take care of the ball and got very lazy for a stretch.
- The refs were very annoying. Lots of fouls called on both teams. "Let 'em play"

Exactly; no one comes out to watch a free-throw shooting contest, which yesterday's game devolved into at times.

As to Peterson attacking the basket, I was happy to see him involved in more aspects of the game, but long-term I think having our big, slow-footed white guys going to the hoop is probably a recipe for a lot of turnovers rather than more scoring. 03-lol
Nevertheless, I guess it keeps the D a little more honest if they at least think you MIGHT do it...

How many people were actually there last night? I had tickets, but didn't go because of the weather.

Compared to days where the weather is better, I thought the crowd was pretty good. In fact, I didn't really see a difference.

I was surprised at the crowd with the weather being so bad. I think that the box score said 1,700. Peterson did have a terrific game. I like McKinney's play. He is our leading rebounder because of his instincts and leaping ability. Every game he comes up with an alley oop type dunk. He will get better and watch him next year.
I was disappointed in our letdown after we got the big lead to start the game. Same old story. We start screwing up with poor decisions, lazy passes and dumb mistakes. They got the message at the half and came out strong.
If this team can put together an entire game they may surprise people in the MAC tournament.
PS....Frank Clair was on the bench.

I thought the crowd was real good considering the circumstances, us playing poorly lately and the terrible weather.

Todd Peterson interview in Norhern Star. The headline calls him "Todd Pete."

<a href='http://www.northernstar.info/articles/?id=4425' target='_blank'>http://www.northernstar.info/articles/?id=4425</a>

I like this bit about free throws (I told you he was off at the start of that game):

NS: You missed a free throw tonight and you looked pretty upset with yourself.

TP: They call them free throws because they’re free buckets. I think I missed three in my career, and I missed four tonight, so I’ll be on the line this week in practice.

I liked how they were goofing on him about his hair.....long, short, long, short. He must get it done at the "Cuttin' Coral".
