Can someone fill me in about the history of the Akron basketball coach without people going psycho on me? They (Akron fans) seem to be a bit defensive about the whole topic.

I simply asked if Mr. Dombrot coached someplace else before Akron, and they act like I’ve got some kind of alterative-motive.

I’ll respect any comments that are too sensitive to post on the Internet--simply state as such.

Thanks in advance.

Here's a brief history:

Dambrot was a grad assistant at Akron in the 1980s. When that staff was let go (due to a very minor infraction of NCAA rules), he went to Tiffin, I believe, as HC. He won a lot of games there.

He also won a lot of games at Ashland University at HC, and was a key assistant for Ben Braun at EMU during that program's high point in the 1980s.

Dambrot was hired to turn around the Central Michigan program but ran into a lot of problems there. I think he was only there for 2 seasons when he was let go for allegedly using an improper racial term with his players during practice. Some say the university was looking for a reason to get rid of him because of other issues -- he was/is VERY intesnse on the sidelines. I saw him coach a game for CMU at Kent when he did a Bobby Knight-type of slamming/screaming temper tantrum on one of his players. The Kent fans went nuts. I'd be surprised if there weren't many complaints to the CMU administration.

After his firing, Dambrot basically was blackballed from college ball. He became a stock broker for Merrell Lynch, and began coaching a group of kids through CYO-type ball. He made his comeback as the coach of the St. Vincent-St. Mary High School team of LeBron James & co. Many of the players he coached in CYO ball eventually played for him at St. V. There were claims that he tried some recruiting short-cuts for St. V. by trying to bring in foreign players. One such player was eventually declared inelligible by the Ohio High School Athletic Association.

Akron's Dan Hipsher brought in Dambrot to help with recruiting. There was a lot of concern on the part of the UA board concerning his past, but they agreed to give him a second chance. I'm sure they are very pleased with the decision today.

Dambrot has always been known as a great Xs and Os coach; if there is a knock, it's that trouble tends to follow him in the form of criticisms of his sidelines behavior and recruiting tactics. There have been no such circumstances at UA, to my knowledge, though. He's got to be the COY favorite at this point.

I changed my mind and have nothing to say. Jupitertoo did a pretty good job. You're a trip, Mr. Astrophysicist.

My parents are Ashland alums, and they don't have many kind words for Mr. Dambrot. He won at AU, but was later implicated in that school's only NCAA rules violation. Fortunately for him, he had already left AU...

Dambrot is a backstabbing, racist lowlife.

This archived link sums it up pretty well.

I am no fan of Flashy...but I never knew the story, only heard that he swore at a player.

What the heII was Dambrot thinking? Glad he lost that game.

Not necessary. With only "very few" upper reserved tickets left yesterday mid day, this is a sell out by now.
