Apparently just being an ex-Gator isn't an automatic ticket onto the Washington Redskins roster after all.
Wide receiver Reidel Anthony was one of seven players cut as teams around the league began the move to get down to 65 players by Tuesday afternoon. Teams must be at 53 by Sunday.
Anthony played five seasons with Tampa Bay before signing with the 'Skins in the off-season. He was one of three former Flordia wide receivers in camp. The other two, Jacquez Green and Chris Doering, are considered locks to make the final roster.
Two other former Florida stars, Danny Wuerrfel and Shane Mathews, are in a fight for the starting quarterback job, though coach Steve Spurrier has said both would get extended playing time.
Anthony had only seven catches in four preseason games.
Anthony signed a one-year contract that did not include a signing bonus. The former first-round draft pick had only 28 catches over his final two seasons in Tampa Bay.
While the release of Anthony was a mild surprise, the waiving of tackle Jerry Wunsch, a starter on Tampa Bay's offensive line the past three seasons, was a bit of a shocker.
The sixth-year pro was a second-round draft pick in 1997 and started 45 consecutive games at right tackle after taking over the job in the fourth week of the 1999 season.
Wunsch became expendable this summer when the Bucs, searching for their best combination of linemen, decided to move second-year pro Kenyatta Walker from left to right tackle.
"It's not a sad day. It's an opportunity to move on," Wunsch said after cleaning out his locker and meeting with coaches. "I've had a great run here. Five years. Got a lot done. I'll always be glad that I got drafted here and they gave me my start."
Anthony and Wunsch were the biggest names on the waiver wire, though not all teams announced a list over the weekend.

Anthony cut himself. He lives two streets from my daughter in Tampa and she says he was still a young college kid in mental and emotional maturity. Just didn't want to pay the price to play in the NFL.
