Brand leaves playoff scenario to BCS

Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS -- The NCAA will allow football teams to play 12 games per year, but it won't enter the postseason playoff fray.

The board of directors approved proposals on Thursday that would add a 12th game to Division I-A schedules -- starting in 2006 -- allow schools to count one victory over Division I-AA schools each year toward bowl eligibility, and loosen the requirements to qualify for Division I-A status.

“ ... I seriously suggest you take up the tournament situation with the BCS.

Brands quotes sound like he's fed up with the BCS. It also sounds like the BCS is in the drivers seat. How does the NCAA relinquish that type of power? What's going on here?

Several significant items approved.

new attendance loophole should end one debate - does that open door to WKU and others to apply for D-1 status. ?...attendance fudging is back to original square one: tix sold OR fannies in seats over sny two seasons.....Cant teams have two crappy weather seasons back to back? (It once rained 13 weekends in succession beginning late summer in the 70"s.)

Counting a d-1aa game every year is HUGE in scheduling. Will we seem more of it by big boys who tend to have good numbers in their house regardless of opponent for opening games...? Remind me if strength of schedule is much of a factor in BCS final rankings?...Was this provision to help mid majors in scheduling more d-1aa games ?
Will NIU be any more likely to get six home games with a 12 game schedule? Collins has his work cut out for him . If we have a need to schedule a TTU - how about WKU and/or SIU again in 2006?

Does adding a few more scholarships to some womens teams take heat off from Title !X watchdogs? Will it reduce more budget cuttting for sports like swimming/wrestling etc because of the added revenue from another game?

It was refreshing to hear Brand say an extra game will not be harmful to the academics of football players . It does not address JoeN's concern about having enuff healthy bodies near end of the season- especially without a bye week.

There is no perfect world but these changes appear to be imporvements.

Strength of schedule is not directly used in determining the BCS rankings, however, many of the computer ratings do use SOS. In fact, BG switching their OCC game from Auburn to Oklahoma last year cost Auburn a shot at the title as they had to reschedule with a D1aa team thus reducing their computer rating.
