Florida guard Brett Nelson will return for his senior season after considering entering his name in the upcoming NBA draft on June 26.
"After talking to my family and the coaching staff I've made a decision to return to Florida for my senior season," said Nelson, a 6-foot-4 guard who averaged 14.6 points a game for the Gators last season. "When I made a decision to come to the University of Florida, I had dreams and goals I wanted to achieve. I have achieved some of them but there is unfinished business on the table.
"I want to graduate from college, win championships and improve my game on all levels. It's been a great three years here and I can't wait for my senior season to start."
A two-time all-SEC selection, Nelson ranked third in the SEC and 16th nationally with 3.12 three-pointers per game. He shot nearly 40 percent from 3-point range and established a Florida record last year by connecting on a 3-pointer in 33 consecutive games, the sixth longest streak in SEC history. He will enter his senior year with 228 career three pointers, just 15 shy of the school record held by Greg Stolt.
"I know Brett is 100 percent committed to being a Florida Gator, but like most kids Brett wanted to look at his options at the next level," said Florida head coach Billy Donovan. "After spending time with his family this weekend, Brett has made a decision to come back for his senior season. I'm excited to have the opportunity to coach Brett for another season."
Nelson will be one of four seniors on the 2002-03 Florida roster, the most on a Gator squad since 1996-97.
