In fact, I think the outfit that the Chief wears was donated from the tribe.
If you're suggesting the Seminole tribe is misguided by supporting all this I would tend to agree. Eventually they will change their minds, causing FSU to crap their collective pants. I'm just glad I'm not a part of it, just as I would not want to be a supporter of the "Battling Negroes", whose mascot I guess would be a black man in a loincloth with a bone in his nose, running around the stadium chucking spears.
I don't see why that would be a problem if the institution simply claimed to be doing so in honor of the spirit of the Negroes.

The Nigerians are a proud tribe of skilled hunters and warriors.  Let's have a sports team called the Nigerians.  You couldn't be opposed to that if you defend the use of Native American nicknames.  But somehow I don't think it would go over too well and therein lies the hypocrisy.

You were saying? :ownd:
So, when Q-Tip drops the N-bomb, does it make it okay for you to do so?
I find your question disingenuous. Oddly though, for someone who advocates so many changes, you lack an awful lot of answers.
What I'm saying is that there is a world of difference between:

1. An African-American oriented magnet school in Columbus deciding to play as the "Nubians."
2. A largely white school in Upper Arlington choosing the same nickname.

The NCAA recognizes this too. That's why, for all the nicknames it has targeted, it has not taken action against North Carolina-Pembroke, home of the Braves.

North Carolina-Pembroke is a historically American Indian university. Students and faculty believe the mascot suits them.

This isn't hard. Columbus Africentric's nickname has no bearing on this discussion than does Notre Dame's nickname.

Good Gosh on all of this PC crap. I am Irish and I know plenty of Negroes and probably some Indians playing for and calling themselves fighting Irish. I guess that I should be offended by this, but to me this is all child's play. I guess that I was tainted during a more innocent time when I, as a child, played cowboys and Indians every day of the week. Some days I was lucky and got to be Tonto. I was a proud Irish kid being a proud Indian. You PC folks make be sick. Keep'um chopping FSU. I love ya. 04-drinky

BTW, I lost a lot of respect for Miami when they became redhawks. What a crock.

Frankly - I refuse to decide for the actual people whose image, likeness etc are being used by a school as to what is acceptable. If the Seminoles as a people don't mind (and may even want it) then we should all accept it and move on. This paternalistic PC-ism gone awry is itself the ultimate insult. It says we have to help them - even if they think they want something else.

And as an Irishman - I officially give my approval for NotreDame to use a part of our folklore as their mascot (even though in Irish culture, a leprechan is nothing to be proud of - it's an harbinger of evil - an greedy imp, a mischievous devil etc). And I also approve of them using the word "Fighting" before Irish even though it may lead people to belive that Irish people are inherantly violent (or that we might even have been able to WIN a war at some point in our history). I also approve of the little dance the leprechan does on the sidelines - even though it might lead others to believe that Irish people are bad dancers who must be drunk to do that in public.

I do, however, disapprove of any references to "River Dancers" and would oppose any school trying to change their name to that - as it paints all of us as physically fit guys with 150 dance partners...ok, on second thought, go ahead.
