SUBJECT: Ball State Announces Football Game Suspensions
MUNCIE, Ind. – Ball State University announced the remaining suspension schedule for football student-athletes who violated the NCAA extra benefits rule by obtaining textbooks not required for their own courses through a book loan program or by receiving improperly obtained textbooks from other players.
Game suspensions for the remainder of the season are:
Bowling Green, Sept. 10 – Scott Bradtmiller, Eddie Burk, David Denham, Brenton Martin, Ryan McKee, Todd Racine, Jordan Trask and Lavell Mosley
Auburn, Sept. 17 – Cortlan Booker, Denham, Louis Johnson, Amara Koroma, Martin, McKee and Donta Smith
Boston College, Oct. 1 – Booker, Burk, Koroma, Mosley and Smith
Western Michigan, Oct. 8 – Booker
The football players were among 45 student-athletes found to have violated the rule during an investigation concluded last May.
The university announced last week that it is conducting an ongoing review of possible extra benefits violations within the book loan program. The review includes additional records for 2004-05 not examined last spring as well as records for the four previous academic years and the current semester.
Ball State athletics director Bubba Cunningham said that although working rapidly is a high priority, ensuring accuracy and due process are even more important.
"The university is moving forward as quickly as possible to analyze all the types of records from all the years that the NCAA has recommended," Cunningham said. "But it is imperative that we take the time necessary to be accurate and to allow student-athletes their right to be heard."
Cunningham also noted that the university has received clarification from the NCAA on what constitutes an extra benefit under the book loan program, and this is a major reason for re-examining 2004-05 and expanding the review to other academic years.
Cunningham said that until the review has been completed — which is likely to take several weeks due to the volume of information to be examined and the number of student-athletes to be interviewed — neither he nor other university officials will be able to offer much additional comment. The university will announce the results of its review upon completion.
Cunningham emphasized that the extra benefits violations under review by the university and the NCAA are limited to the book loan program. The investigation has not uncovered any other type of violation.
Since I don't know any of these guys - I don't know how much this hurts from an actual playtime perspective - I would imagine this has huge "mental" ramifications for the team though.
