Toward that end, he intends to conduct interviews in the next two weeks.

"I've narrowed it down to a few, a few I've had in the back of my mind all the time," he said.

Smith declined to name the leading candidates. The names most often heard are former Tates Creek player Darrin Horn, now an assistant at Marquette, and Alvin "Pooh" Williamson, a Tulsa assistant who played for Smith at the school in the 1990s.

UK is looking to replace Mike Sutton, a longtime Smith aide who became coach at Tennessee Tech earlier this spring. Smith did not see the need to fill the opening with an ace recruiter or an X-and-O wizard. He'd prefer to have both.

"I'm looking for the total guy," the UK coach said. "The guy who can be a head coach today." </font><hr /></blockquote><font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">
