It seems as if everywhere University of Kentucky men's coach Tubby Smith goes, National Basketball Association rumors are soon to follow. Smith, who is in Colorado Springs, Colo., this weekend for the U.S. Junior National team tryouts, has been rumored to be a candidate for the Denver Nuggets' vacant position.
Smith, a member of the USA Basketball men's collegiate committee, told the Denver Post for a story in today's editions that he had not been contacted by the Nuggets and would not comment about the opening. He added that he is happy coaching the Wildcats.
''Every job I've gotten is because somebody called me or they called somebody else first who talked to me,'' Smith said. ''That's how it always happens. I've never applied for a job. I just do the best with the job that I have.''
Smith's name consistently was mentioned as a possible replacement should Philadelphia 76ers' coach Larry Brown retire. Brown effectively smashed those rumors by announcing he would return.
That doesn't mean Smith hasn't thought about coaching in the NBA.
''I could do the job on the next level,'' he said. ''But then again, every player on my team thinks they can be an NBA player, too. It is never as tough as it looks or easy as it looks.''

Tubby has a nice deal where he is at. Great fan base, easy money to win the SEC every year, and no football team to speak of to compete with for campus funds.
