I've watched every year of C-USA football being competely unbiased, i think i'd go with this order as the best of C-USA..
1. DeAngelo Williams RB Memphis
2. Aduilas Thomas DE Southern Miss
3. Dave Ragone QB Louisville
4. Kevin Kolb QB Houston
5. Shaun King QB Tulane
6. Derrick Nix RB Southern Miss
7. Chris Redman QB Louisville
8. Aronald Jackson WR Louisville
9. David Garrad QB East Carolina
10 a. Rod Davis MLB Southern Miss
10 b. Daryal Hackney QB UAB.

Adalius thomas is the best end of discussion. As far as Qb's Id say Ragone and Garrard in terms if C-usa. And anyone who could make memphis a decent team would have to get my vote as well. So D. Williams would get a vote as well,

I'm obviously biased so, I won't tell you how great I think Kolb is but I must counter two statements made in this thread.
1) To whomever thinks that all Kolb did was throw 5 yd (or 10 yard) passes to Vincent Marshall who then ran 60 yds, you, sir, haven't watched ANY game film other than that where we beat your sorry butt.
Kolb could throw deep and hard and he could run like hell. No, he's not Vince Young but he was more elusive than any UL qb I've seen in C-USA. Kolb is also a fearless leader and a quality individual but that's just icing on the cake given what else he brings to the table.
2) To the Tigger who thinks UH's offense is "related to" the Texas Tech offense, you too, are mistaken unless Mike Leach is a student of Art Briles. Art changes little things every year but the backbone of his system has been the same ever since he was racking up 4 State Championships at Stephenville HS. And, that was long before Leach was at Tech or OU. All that being said, Art was RB Coach at Tech for two years but that doesn't mean squat.

AS hard as I try, I can't be unbiased regarding DeAngelo, so I won't even try to make that comparison.
It's also difficult for Memphis fans to be completely accurate about Kolb's career. We never saw him have a great game here. Based on his performances here, he'd fall significantly behind Redmond, King, and Ragone at QB alone. It's very difficult to compare Kolb to Thomas because their contributions were so different.
I wish Kolb good luck in the NFL and hope he represents CUSA as well as Farve has. However, I'm surprised we're even having the conversation regarding him being the best ever in CUSA.....I just can't see it..

I agree.

I agree. I honestly don't think Kolb or anyone can lay claim to being the BEST of any C-USA class. The league has definately put up some pretty impressive individuals (D. Williams, Adalius Thomas, those Louisville QB's, heck I think we can even include tcu's Tomlinson in this bunch) so it's a stretch to say that he is the best. As st932253 said... he hasn't even thrown a pass in the nfl.

Both Ragone and Lefors could outrun Kolb. Lefors was maybe the second most elusive QB to play in CUSA other than King.

Re: Kolb is the best player in CUSA History! Or is he?
SPECoog518 Wrote:Seriously gents,
I'd like your unbiased opinions. What goes into being considered "the greatest"? Is it stats? Someone like DAngelo certainly has stats? Or is it Championships? Well, DAngelo would fall well short of the mark on that one.
Kolb holds 83 Houston or Conference USA records. He also took a team that hadn't been to a bowl since 1996, and led UH to 3 bowls out of his 4 years (including the Liberty in his final year).
Kolb left CUSA a Champion. And then went on to become the Eagles top choice in the 2007 draft!
So, I'd be interested to know if there is a greater player in this history of CUSA Football than Kevin Kolb. And, please provide legit comparisons to make your case.
IMHO, KOLB IS HANDS DOWN THE BEST (and will be voted the player of the decade) I simply don't see his all-time CUSA records going down any time soon.
The big difference here is that Quarterbacks have nine million different stats. Kolb holds HOUSTON records which are great and all considering the past but DeAngelo holds NATIONAL records and a couple of which are very elite (All purpose yards leader and #4 overall in total rushing yards.)
Saying that, DeAngelo held a mediocre team at best on his shoulders and sent them to a bowl game in three consecutive years. In football, one person cannot carry a team.
DeAngelo was much better than Kolb will ever be.

I know people are gonna think me and Eagle Rock Cafe are being biased but if any of you remember AD's time in C-USA you would almost have to give him the nod. He dominated offenses in C-USA, feared and respected He was on the all C-USA team all 4 years he played at Southern Miss, he was a 3-time C-USA first team selection, 2-time defensive player of the year. Liberty Bowl MVP and Liberty Bowl defensive player of the game during two liberty bowls in which he played in.. Was apart of 3 C-USA championships, Southern Miss lost only 2 C-USA games during his time in C-USA. And he racked up 34 sacks during his career. The man made opposing offensive coordinators gameplan against him. I think he deserves consideration for the best ever to play in C-USA.
I think in football it's tough to compare guys in different positions let alone different sides of the ball. I don't think you can say a defensive player is better than an offensive player and vice versa. I say we try to come up with a best defensive player and best offensive player. I agree that Thomas probably was the best defensive player. DeAngelo was probably the best offensive player.

Kolb had a paltry 17-14 record in CUSA, so people watched their teams beat his sorry butt nearly the same number of times. That's not exactly "Player of the Decade" material.

Call me biased, but DeAngelo ran ragged over C-USA for 4 years. Kolb did it for 1.

In The Know Wrote:Kolb played for 4 years and won 1 championship, and failed to win a single bowl game. Call me unimpressed. The only reason that he broke records is that he started 4 years straight, which is extremely rare for a QB.
Just comparing him and DeAngelo, DW was a much better player. DW took the entire team on his shoulders and won games for Memphis. All Kolb did was throw little 5 yard passes, and his playmakers did the rest. IMHO, Kolb's stats were padded by people like Vincent Marshall. DW's stats were all him. Kolb was a great QB, but to even mention him as the greatest CUSA player ever is laughable.
Put down the Hatorade dude!
Suckas like you always want to attribute Kolb's success to the help from his teammates, yet in the same breath, always want to place the blame for the team's shortcomings squarely on Kolb's shoulders.
You all suck at analyzing players. Suckas.

Just for frame of reference here is a youtube video of Sefan Lefors highlights from the 2004 Liberty Bowl. The plays are indicative of plays he made every game during his two years as a starter. Those of you who remember him probably agree he was more elusive than Kolb. Those of you who don't remember need to watch. He is an all-time great at Louisville and was one of the most productive QB's in school history.
Strangely enough the Liberty Bowl was probably his worst game that season, also beware of language in the song the vid is set to if at work:

Nope. LT's last season in college was the 2000 football season, which was also TCU's last year in the WAC.
