2002 Homecoming Week Schedule
STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Hoping to get back into the win column and end a three-game losing skid, Mississippi State's football Bulldogs step out of Southeastern Conference action Saturday, hosting Troy State during Homecoming 2002 festivities. Kickoff time is slated for 1:30 p.m. CT at Davis Wade Stadium at Scott Field on the MSU campus.

State enters the game 1-4 overall following a 34-10 setback at South Carolina this past Saturday. TSU is 2-4 after a solid 41-3 victory over Austin Peay.

As the Bulldogs well know, Troy State will be no easy team to beat, as the Trojans upset MSU 21-9 on Homecoming Day last season. That is the only time the two schools have ever met on the gridiron.

Despite the loss to Troy State last year, MSU still holds a very impressive 42-18-3 record in Homecoming matchups. In fact, before last season's setback to the Trojans, State had won seven consecutive Homecoming affairs.

State was led last week by senior split end Terrell Grindle, who hauled in five passes for 106 yards, his third career 100-yard game. He moved into eighth place on MSU's career receiving yardage list with that performance. Defensively, linebacker Mario Haggan registered yet another double-digit tackle outing with 13 stops at South Carolina. That tally put the senior all-American over 300 career tackles (309).

Troy State is paced by running back DeWhitt Betterson, who averages 72 yards per game on the ground (131 and three scores last week vs. APSU). Receiver Jason Samples is hauling in over five receptions for nearly 70 yards per game for the Trojans. Quarterback Hansell Bearden is tallying just over 200 yards of total offense per contest as well.

Following this weekend's game, State will complete its 2002 non-conference slate next week, travelling to meet the Memphis Tigers in Memphis, Tenn. MSU has claimed eight straight wins over UM.
