???? From the Rice Board ????
Former Owl Dad Wrote:Reading on one of their boards - I discovered a thread stating an arrangement has been made by ECU to cancel the NCS game UNLESS they beat Rice.

Let me see.... lose at Rice 6-5, lose at NCS 6-6, lose at the championship game 6-7 ( if they qualify ).... no bowl.

Could this be correct? If it is, what kind of statement does that make. Why have a schedule if you won't play it out. Can we get a mulligan against UCLA or Tulane?

It is in this thread.

All I can say is WHAT?

I hope this helps and I hope the guy is an idiot. I can see no reason for this to happen as you guys have to beat Rice to go to the championship game - correct??

Have a good one.

I think that was a little tongue-in-cheek, actually. Just a post to emphasize that right now, the State game is irrelevant and all that matters is beating Rice.

If we beat Rice, then technically the State game is irrelevant.

My guess was the guy was trying to get all the NCSU chatter off the board and make everyone focus on the Rice game, which is the game that really matters at this point.

Good to know and sorry I missed the satire. That is a problem when you don't know the other guys.

I can't imagine that you guys would not be salivating to play Rice. It is marked as a sure victory on everyone's column and losing to the Owls is worse than death.

Good luck to you guys and thanks for straightening me out.

Um, not salivating here. It's actually very stressfull. After more than a half decade of inadequacy, we are on the cusp of making a statement. The big problem is that the letdowns of the last 5 or so years really haunts us.

Not really, not after the last four years. And to hear Coach Holtz talk about Rice, you'd think we were playing the Bears.

The only reason I can think of cancelling the NCST game is if ECU fans are not allowed to bring their rain coats and umbrellas into Carter-Finley.

Graham addressed our boosters and told the group that the Pirates most remind them of us. That is quite a compliment as we are very disciplined and what is lacking in athleticism is compensated for with intelligence. He said you guys are very well coached. We both protect the ball. I think as it stands you have a better defense statistically, but we feed on the big play. I think it boils down to the O lines for both teams. Whichever can establish the run best will have the best chance for success.

I sure am glad you guys are coming off a must win last week and having to travel to our place.

Rumor has it that we will show up.

We could lose to Rice and NCSU and still go to the championship game at 6-6. if S. Miss were to lose another game we go to the championship reguardless. If we lost in the championship game we would be 6-7 and would not recieve a bowl according to Holtz. Holtz said on his radio show given that senerio we may decline the championship game to accept a bowl bid if there were one on the table.

That's actually an option?

Ick, and extra-ick if we actually used it.

I agree. If we get in the champ game, we should play. Let's not be like TCU.

Holtz was going through the list of options. Another option that is possible not for us but in the future is a team wins a divison at 5-7 (5-3) and go to the championship game. If they were to win the championship at 6-7 they would get a bowl because they get an auto bid.

If this did play out it would be a nightmare because you would have some fans that would demand we play and others that would meltdown if we lost and didn't go to a bowl when we had a chance. From the way Holtz sounded I think we would decline a chance to play and go to a bowl. Sounded like we had already talked about the possiblities.

Also another nugget of interest is the fact that the CUSA championship game is on a Friday night this year. HMMMM Just think of the possible problems that could cause if we were hosting it.

When do the HS playoffs wrap up? Also, isn't the guy that ripped us so bad over the Cinci game on staff with us now, or am I just making stuff up again?

Harold Robinson, but I'm not sure, he was brought in to repair the relationship. He is an alumi BTW. I know the old New Bern coach was another one that really pushed and go us banned for high school campus's .

It will be interesting next year considering we are back. ESPN will be wanting to throw us on Friday night again I'm sure. It will be interesting how we handle it.

How would/could you decline the championship game? Is it even an option? Does the conference 'invite' or 'require' the game's participants?
