GAME RECAP

Greg Zolman tossed a
three-yard touchdown pass to Todd Yoder midway through the
fourth quarter as Vanderbilt pulled out an 11-10 Southeastern
Conference victory over upset-minded South Carolina.

The Gamecocks (0-8, 0-6 SEC East) came close to giving Lou Holtz
his first victory as South Carolina coach, taking an 8-3 lead
into the final period. But Zolman's TD pass capped a 10-play,
90-yard drive and lifted Vanderbilt (5-3, 2-3) into an 11-8 lead
with 7:16 to play.

South Carolina had two safeties, including one on the game's
final play. The Gamecocks surrendered 114 points in their
previous three conference losses.

The defenses dominated throughout with neither team getting into
the end zone until Yoder's touchdown. Vanderbilt gained just
189 total yards while South Carolina was held to 163.

John Markham booted a 21-yard field goal with 3:15 remaining in
the first quarter to give Vanderbilt a 3-0 lead. But Steve
Florio converted a 29-yarder with four seconds left in the first
half and a 43-yarder with 5:29 remaining in the third quarter to
give the Gamecocks a 6-3 edge.

Zolman completed 9-of-17 passes for 103 yards for Vanderbilt
while Rodney Williams rushed for 96 yards on 18 carries.

South Carolina's two quarterbacks, Kyle Crabb and Kevin Sides,
combined to complete only 9-of-22 passes for 68 yards. The
Gamecocks were held to 95 yards on the ground, with Andrew
Pinnock picking up 56 on 11 carries.

Vanderbilt cut South Carolina's lead in the all-time series to
7-2.
