RE: What would flip the script?
The ACC is never catching up to fan attendance numbers in football, but could probably pull away in numbers with basketball.

Larger schools.

Alas, that takes a while.

Dang it, I’ve seen this show a hundred times already. Where’s the remote?

RE: What would flip the script?
The ACC is #3 in revenues. The gap between it and the top two can presently be expected to grow.

Strategically, there are three things to be done.
1. Admit it. No denial, no magical thinking.
2. Avoid dropping lower. (It can happen with poor decisions.)
3. Be ready to jump on any opportunities that break.

Tactically, you improve revenues where you can.

Don’t confuse tactics for strategy. You’re not “catching the P2” by scheduling more Thursday night games or hyping a less lucrative sport. You are just taking care of what you control.

Realistically, accept that any current member who sees a chance to move up will take it. Don’t take it personally. Florida State and Miami will never relax and get comfortable with payouts closer to UCF than UF. The same holds true of UNC or Clemson with payouts closer to West Virginia than South Carolina. Some schools will inevitably feel ill at ease in a #3 conference. Expect the inevitable.

You would need ND to commit its football to the ACC. (Not going to happen).
Bring in Cincinnati and Memphis to bring two new large population states for subscriber fees. (Because you aren't getting OSU and Tenn).
Then you would need to have a run of winning multiple CFP and NCAABB championships. (Preferably by multiple teams).
Finally the ACC would have to be able to renegotiate its TV contracts with its networks to substantially boost payouts.

No chance unless Paramount sorts out its WB situation. And then decides to re-enter the CFB fray.

Also the clash, between desired change, And don't dare change my traditions.

It is a strategy.

I guess that’s the position any M2 league is in these days. You have to map the right course and still get lucky with traffic lights.

We need a virus that makes everyone crave 24/7 Wake Forest games.

Twilight Zone had better scripts to flip. But we do unlock this door with the key of imagination, and move into a land that is both shadow and substance of things and ideas.

Have you noticed that when ACC football is on TV they don't show a lot of wide shots of the crowd? If they do, the stadiums are looking half full. Or less. Even the expensive seats and premium seats are looking half empty.

We have to have a product our fans want to see. That will translate to non-fans wanting to see.

In its earliest days fist fights were a not uncommon happening at ACC basketball games. Nobody suffered much punishment. There was at least one truly outrageously evil basketball coach, Frank McGuire, and one truly outrageously funny one, Bones McKinney. I’m not recommending fights but I do recommend outrageousness. Quit being so damned polite and refined.

A good product goes along with having butts in seats. Maybe we need to generate some storylines to play out before games to generate interest, like the WWE. Don’t fix the games but generate drama leading up to the games. Have coaches cut promos or come close to having a bar fight but are separated by players or cops. Script some soap opera like content, channel some Jerry Springer.

You know who brings butts in the seats and is within the footprint? WVU and ECU.

No to ECU, too many Carolina teams now. I would vote yes to WV. WV, BYU & TT.
