Other games (Oct. 23-24)
At Tulsa Friday night, Army looked like it would suffer a Rice vs. Tulsa-style defeat. Three minutes into the second half, Army was up 28-14. Then Tulsa scored 3 touchdowns, while Army had four 3 & outs.

But with 3:52 left in the game, the momentum shifted. Army stopped Tulsa and blocked their punt, setting up a short field for a score that tied the game at 35-all.

Army stopped Tulsa again, and got the ball at their 37-yard line with 51 seconds left.

After getting one first down, the Army QB ran through an inexplicably open field for 16 yards, to the Tulsa 36, stopping the clock with 6 ticks left. It would be a 53-yard field goal attempt.

The Army kicker had made a 51-yard field goal in the first half, but the coach wanted to be a little closer, and also centered ... which is exactly what the Army QB did. Army's last timeout was called with 1 second left, and the ball on the Tulsa 33.

The 50-yard kick was down the middle with plenty of distance!!

Twenty-one unanswered 2nd-half Tulsa points would not defeat Army. No, sir!! The cadets walked off with a 38-35 win.

Wait. You’re telling me that option teams CAN come back from large deficits in the second half? Don’t tell Russell. It would remove all purpose from his life.

1. The blocked punt was the key - not the outmoded option offense;

2. I also watched Air Force lose to Wyoming when their option offense (with many quarterbacks being hurt because of the nature of the offense could not overcome a slight defect.

It's amazing what you learn by actually watching the games, rather than reading a short summary and saying "gotcha" like an idiot.

#14 Houston (6-1) vs #10 Utah (6-0) tonight in Utah at ESPN’s College GameDay. Houston Leads the Country in 3rd Down Efficiency. If Houston pulls the upset, they could land a top 10 team.

Ooops, over on the Plains, now 31-10 at the half, and Tigers will get the ball first in 2nd Half to boot. Not a happy day so far. Sam Leavitt is having himself a day.

Michigan made a tying FG ... but lost in OT, 13-6.

In OT, Indiana scored on 2 plays; Blue made a 1st down, but then a 4th & 9 pass by their scrambling freshnan QB was too low for the diving receiver to catch.

I would like to confess that I’m rooting for UH in this one (ok it’s also in my sig but TBH I wrote that back when UH was in THE AMERICAN).

I have BYU, UH, and Oklahoma State reppin the b12 this year.

Cincinnati 37, #8 Texas Tech 24 (F) helps move those red raiders out the way of the upwardly mobile American Alumni Association.

And then that other American alum UCF goes and knocks off my bYU pick (!)

UCF 39, BYU 31 (2 OT)

I'm glad Indiana won, especially after last week's close loos to that Ohio school.
Now, if Michigan can beat OSU at season's end, that would be great.

Rice alum Drew Mehringer fired as Oregon OC after their loss.

Also Baylor fires its head coach.
