Alberta Referendum
Quote: Just a few minutes after all polling stations closed, CBC News projected Albertans have rejected a proposal to hold a binding referendum on whether to begin the process of separating from Canada.

Cheers erupted at the Forever Canadian watch party in Edmonton once the projection was announced, while fists and flags were held high above the heads of the pro-Confederation campaign’s supporters.

The mood at separatist watch parties was more subdued after the announcement.

Early numbers showed that with 44.8 per cent of polls reporting, 76.2 per cent of the Question 10 votes are for the stay side.

Polls have suggested that numbers on the separation question have largely been baked in for years, with the majority leaning toward remaining in Canada.

The independence question was added to the referendum ballot by Premier Danielle Smith earlier this year after she argued having a vote was the proper way to respect the hundreds of thousands of Albertans who signed duelling citizen petitions on the issue.

RE: Alberta Referendum
Until Ottawa addresses the pillaging of Alberta resources for use by the rest of the country, the independence movement will continue just like it has in Quebec. In other words, the battle is lost, but the war continues.

RE: Alberta Referendum
Well, this vote was planned to be the referendum for over a year. The liberals fought in the courts to stop it and got a favorable ruling, taking the referendum vote off the ballot and it was replaced with the “should we have a referendum” question.

That, as you would expect, killed the support for the separatists movement. They rightfully saw the liberals weren’t going to let the movement happen whether the constitution allowed it or not. Then you had Carney bribing Smith,’after which she completely changed her position. Canada’s politics are dirtier than ours.

There were 10 questions on the ballot, including things about immigration and more provincial rights. Only two failed, one amending the constitution to allow provinces to opt out of federal programs related to health care and education (I imagine health care was the issue) only got 48.5% and then the referendum, which only got 25%.
