America is big, rich, and populous (ie., third greatest population on earth) and yet routinely underperforms in the World Cup. The USA is like the pyramid peak of the P4 with few peers. We should do better.

The root causes are greed, complacency, and deference to other nations.

Also, the USA should cease trying to emulate other countries and instead adopt a style suited for the American temperament by playing to win with emphasis on scoring and on physicality.

Belgium was the quicker and more physical team, and the Americans didn't have the ball movement outside of counterattacks. They remind me a lot of the San Antonio FC team that beat Louisville City FC in the USL Championship Final a few years ago.

i know, the above, it's an old tired take, but all it takes is for kabillionaires to start poaching the stars. the only way to have undeniably rich futbol is to manufacture it

It's because our youth sports culture is broken. Most of our soccer players are a bunch of upper middle class to upper class white kids. Yeah good luck.

Agree, Soccer is football for commies. Football is Soccer for capitalist.

Top level soccer is available to everyone in most of the world. In the US, its available to the upper middle class and up.

I grew up playing, played in college, made a professional team, and had many friends play in the Premier League, MLS, and the US National Team - including 2 that played in a World Cup. It frustrates me how far behind we are.

Pay to play needs to take a hike.
