“The slow & sad downfall of CCU”

Curious to get Chants fans reactions of this youtuber’s breakdown of the Coastal program and his take of whether there has been a decline in the program. Personally, there’s been some regression but I think it might be a tad mellow dramatic to say Coastal is on a “sad downfall”

I hate that so many people think that what a program is is what it's done the past 5 years.

Coaching 100% matters. If you don't hire smart no one in this conference can average 8 or 9 wins a year. All you have to do is look at Troy going from Neal Brown to Chip Lindsey to Jon Sumrall to Gerard Parker.

I fully expect Coastal to be the favorite in the east this year.

Good coaches are absolutely paramount for success. The fact is that good coaches at our level will be taken by teams above us (P4 for the most part). This means our schools have to consistently hire new staff and hope they can continue the success of the previous coach. This results in some good seasons and bad seasons keeping any one school from always being at the top. The waves of up years and down years will hit every team at one time or another. Some members have yet to experience this but it will happen.

Tim Beck was an odd hire simply because it didnt make any sense. Supposedly Bob Chesney interviewed for the job but Beck's relationship with Moglia won over. Would most likely be a different situation for the program.

Ryan Beard is a much more promising hire on paper. Hopefully things can get back on track this coming season.

It never makes any sense when a shltty coach is hired. Usually when something like that happens, there's a connection between the AD and the HC, but I don't see an obvious one w/ Hogue and Beck.

I posted this on Jan 1, 2023 when McCall announced he was returning:
Quote:I'm of the opinion that Tim Beck sucks and Coastal's run is done. He [McCall] should have saved himself when he had the chance and got out while the getting was good. Really surprised he isn't heading to the NFL - he's got the size and his numbers are crazy. Be interesting to see if those numbers drop this next season. For reference, he's at 71% career completion w/ a 10:1 TD:INT ratio.

If there is one team in the East that I have no worries about, its the Chants. Each year since moving to FBS has had its own set of issues for JMU going into the season. Started with being a roster dominated with FCS players and then morphed into coaching changes and several massive rebuilds due to poaching from NIL. One constant was a beatdown on CCU. You could combine all the points they've scored the last 4 years, and they still wouldn't have scored enough to win a single game.
2022: 47-7 win
2023: 56-14 win
2024: 39-7 win
2025: 59-10 win

Don't discount the negative impact that a conglomerate of well heeled boosters can play in a bad hire. Not saying that happened with CCU, but it is not an infrequent factor in a bad hire. Sadly, a booster never gets fired. The AD, who has a hire forced down his throat, takes the fall.

RE: “The slow & sad downfall of CCU”
There are some that hated the Beck hire from the beginning, some that turned after not showing any improvement over 3 seasons. I felt like he deserved a fair shot and he just didn’t produce. We weren’t terrible but also not very good.

Moglia made the hire as they were colleagues in Nebraska when Moglia was getting back into coaching. So that is where the donor piece comes in as he is a former coach and a donor to the program.

With a new coaching staff with a very young coach with a very short resume as a head coach we again have to wait and see what will happen. But the energy is good and looking forward to seeing what Coach Beard can do. If he’s successful we’ll be in the market in 2-4 years. If he’s unsuccessful we’ll be in the market in 2-4 years.

Care to share some of what you're drinking? 04-cheers

Coaching does matter. And successful SBC coaches will be poached. Just like our best players. Money talks.

That shared, if the return of Billy Napier to the SBC succeeds at JMU the Dukes may avoid losing their 3rd HC after just 1 or 2 years. My thought is P4 teams will likely look at Napier as damaged goods, and the Florida payout over the next 5 years, coupled with JMU's salary, Billy will be pulling down between $3.5-4 mil per year. At that salary other G6 schools will likely pass, and it will take several successful years at JMU to rehab his rep before a P4 program comes calling.

As always, time and Napier's performance at JMU will determine how long he stays or goes. Hiring a P4 retread hasn't set the world on fire at GASo or ASU, but Billy is still relatively young. Bottom line, the SBC coaching carousel will likely continue, rather like our teams rosters.
