FIFA / World Cup - Regions
FIFA is set up geographically by rough continental lines of Africa (CAF), Asia (AFC), Europe (UEFA), North America (CONCACAF), South America (CONMEBOL), and Oceania (OFC). There is some finagling due to issues in politics, competitiveness, and others. Australia plays in AFC, 3 counties in South America play in CONCACAF, Israel plays in UEFA, etc.
That being said, I have always grouped the countries a little differently. I focus a bit more on culture/values and less on competitiveness.
> Europe: Traditional Europe - Turkey + Russia.
> Middle East & North Africa (MENA): Countries in the Sahara Desert over to the Arabian Peninsula up to border of Russia, and over into the "Stans" plus Turkey.
> North America: The Big 3, Central America, and the Caribbean.
> South America: South America, including the countries that currently play in CONCACAF.
> Africa: Sub-Saharan Africa.
> Asia: India up to China and over then down to Indonesia. Not Papua New Guinea.
> Oceania: Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and the Pacific islands.
According to the confederations, this year's World Cup looks like this:
> UEFA: 16
> CAF: 10
> AFC: 9
> CONCACAF: 6
> CONMEBOL: 6
> OFC: 1
According to my split, this year's World Cup looks like this:
> Europe: 15
> MENA: 11
> North America: 6
> South America: 6
> Africa: 6
> Asia: 2
> Oceania: 2
