The owners approved the relocation. When exactly are they moving?

To answer my own question: 2028

Not quite a done deal yet.

I would not be surprised if a'sthe next four years in Summerlin.

Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman isn't exactly extending a warm embrace to the Oakland Athletics, who plan to build a $1.5 billion stadium in her city.

In fact, Goodman said the team's stadium plan "does not make sense" and that A's ownership should go back to the drawing board and pitch a new plan in the Bay Area.

"I personally think [the A's have] got to figure out a way to stay in Oakland to make their dream come true," Goodman told the Front Office Sports Today podcast, which was released Tuesday.

Goodman took to social media later Tuesday to add context to her comments and said she was "excited about the prospect of Major League Baseball" in her city, though she didn't back off her statement that Oakland and the A's should try to make their relationship work in a "perfect world."

She added: "Should that fail, Las Vegas has shown that it is a spectacular market for major league sports franchises."

Apparently, she doesn't like the plans due to potential traffic congestion in the stadium area and felt the site which the A's rejected, which has better highway access, would have been better or that the team should stay in Oakland. Should get real interesting but there's no way the A's stay in Oakland. If 27,000 (which the Astros eclipse routinely during slow nights) is all they can muster for a "reverse boycott," then the market just isn't there anymore, especially with the Giants right across the bay.

The obvious solution is San Jose but the Giants have blocked it, which is dumb because having two teams, one in each league, drums up interest in the sport in the market and, in turn, with the Gigantes.

I wonder if the A's could take the Giants to court over that.

The city of San Jose has it's case against the Commissioner's Office regarding anti-trust violations denied and appealed up to SCOTUS between 2013-15. The Athletics would just be setting money on fire.

The A’s should start shopping themselves to more cities: Portland, SLC, San Antonio, etc.

Muskie: Are Charlotte & Nashville among the “etc.”?

Oh no.

MLB does not want that. Too many cities recruiting the Athletics will ruin the cost of expansion teams and the other owners get much more from expansion fees than possible relocation. Plus, the revenue streams are all in the air now due to the Diamond Sports Group bankruptcy. MLB wants to keep digital rights for themselves to bundle as a whole for individuals.

I'd really hate to see them leave, the city and the team had a great affinity for each other in their heyday.

Quote:It appears as if the Athletics could play in Oakland a bit longer than expected.

With the A's lease to play at Oakland Coliseum set to expire after the 2024 MLB season, the team will meet with City of Oakland and Alameda County officials Thursday to discuss a lease extension, the San Francisco Chronicle's John Shea reported Tuesday, citing industry sources.

In attendance at the meeting will be Oakland chief of staff Leigh Hanson, City Council member Rebecca Kaplan, county supervisor David Haubert and A’s president Dave Kaval, Shea also reported.

The A's are moving to Sacramento from 2025 to 2027, with an option for 2028 too if needed. They will play in the Sacramento River Cat's Triple-A park that seats 15k people.

I see now that Sacramento is going to bid for a MLB expansion team. Not sure if they got enough investors to be a serious bidder but maybe they will find them.

Even if they find an investor, MLB is going to be hard-pressed to turn down public money being offered in Portland and Salt Lake City. Taking a privately financed bid allows other cities to stand up to current or prospective ownership groups.
