New York — When he launched his presidential campaign in late 2022, then-candidate Donald Trump blasted his successor for aggressively releasing oil from America’s emergency stockpile ahead of the midterm elections.
“The strategic national reserves, which I filled up, have been virtually drained in order to keep gasoline prices lower, just prior to the election,” Trump said during his 2024 campaign launch at Mar-a-Lago, referring to President Joe Biden’s record-setting releases from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR).

But now, as voter frustration over high gas prices mounts, President Trump is draining the nation’s pile of emergency oil at an even faster pace than Joe Biden ahead of this year’s midterms.

Not only has the magnitude of SPR releases under Trump surpassed records, but the amount of crude left in the reserve is approaching the lowest levels since the early 1980s. Back then, the United States had a far smaller economy that consumed less energy.

So...he is releasing the oil at very high prices... So he can refill it when this Iran crap stops and the prices plummet??

Also notice how the numbnuts left 2022 off of their graph in that link. Dont want anyone seeing how that year went down for sure.

He tried that back in 2020 and the Dems shut it down, because they saw it as a hand out to oil companies, but thought we should refill it at $90/barrel cause that made sense.

Of all the very valid hits on Trump this is the time you should be releasing the oil reserves. Now sure he unilaterally caused the conditions that forced the need to release the reserves, but under the current conditions they should be released.

That's what the reserve is for, is during an oil crisis/crunch... Not for political points before a mid-term election... But I digress..

You digress with a point that confuses me. Biden starting doing SPR releases in March of 2022, right after the start of the Ukraine War on February 24th 2022, that caused an oil crisis at that time. Also yes happened to be a midterm election year. Trump has started doing SPR releases after the start of the Iran war on February 28th 2026, that caused an oil crisis currently, and that again also happens to be a midterm election year. I'm not seeing how one of these actions is obviously about political points and the other is about using the reserve as intended.
