Back when I was kid I hardly ever heard cuss words from adults in public or even in many private settings. But if you listen to the tapes of Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Clinton, Obama, etc---they used that language all the time in the oval office. In the 60's and 70's that would have been shocking (and it was one reason Nixon really didnt want those tapes made public--besides the other obvious reason). Today---we are a coarser society. I hear that language from almost every moron blabbering on his phone at 50 decibels higher than necessary in the middle of the electronics department at Target with kids all around.
This is called ‘trying to normalize the behaviour.’
Yes, discourse has deteriorated. Much comment on this board may be taken as Exhibit A. Even so: Mr Trump’s behaviour is not normal.
Every recent US president—and every non-recent president, for that matter—knew when a serious occasion called for statecraft, accountability, and responsible communication. Moments of this kind are why past presidents have sought the job. Each genuinely believed, with varying degrees of accuracy, he had what it took to rise to such a moment in a national time of need.
Trump not only does not do this,
he does not know what any of that is. Accountability? Statecraft? National time of need? He has no idea.
Use these words around him and you may as well be talking in Sanskrit. He doesn’t understand.
There are tasks a normal adult brain handles that Trump's brain simply does not. Something important is missing. The lack is obvious, and it is not improving with age.
Something about him stays a toddler. ‘I want I want I want.’ ‘I take I take I take.’ He encounters a boundary? He pronounces it ‘unfair’ and hurls abuse. He makes a mess and doesn’t know how to clean it up? He screams until an adult somewhere does something.
That’s Trump’s whole act. It’s all he knows how to do.
