RE: Preference for 14th Member
Conference expansion typically raises concerns about travel costs. The actual 2026-27 CAA schedules and confirmed travel pairs tell a different story for NC A&T when Fairfield University joins in 2027 — the schedule becomes more efficient.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL — two northeast trips become one
The 2026-27 CAA women's schedule sends A&T to Northeastern on January 24 as a standalone flight and also to Long Island for Hofstra later in the season — two separate northeast trips. Fairfield's addition makes that more efficient on both counts. Northeastern and Fairfield are just 95 miles apart, so one flight covers two New England games. And with the New England and Long Island swings alternating years, A&T makes just one northeast trip per season instead of two.
MEN'S BASKETBALL — already one trip, stays one trip
The 2026-27 CAA men's schedule already combines Hofstra (Long Island, Feb. 4) and Northeastern (Boston, Feb. 6) into a single northeast road swing — 215 miles between campuses. When Fairfield joins, the scheduling restructures into two tighter alternating clusters: Northeastern + Fairfield (95 miles apart) one year, Hofstra + Stony Brook (45 miles apart) the next. One northeast trip per season, never both clusters in the same year.
BASEBALL — northern scheduling becomes more efficient
Fairfield joins the North Division, expanding it from 5 to 6 teams. A&T currently makes 1 northern road series every year. With the restructure, that becomes an alternating home/away rotation — a northern away series every other year instead of every year.
SOFTBALL — same efficiency gain
Identical North Division expansion. A&T's annual northern road series becomes an alternating home/away rotation — cutting northern road exposure by 50% on average.
Fairfield's addition doesn't just strengthen the CAA academically and athletically. It makes the conference schedule more efficient for every southern institution in it.
