20 years ago, Chicago looked to have settled into a conference home in the Mid Continent Conference. For reasons I cannot completely explain, because I don’t know the exact ins and outs, Chicago State withdrew to become an independent. How voluntary it was is something I don’t know, but have opinions on.

So, let’s have a look at where all the world beaters and over achievers from that group are today.

1 is in the top half of all D1 teams. The rest are in the bottom third. 4 are in the bottom 50 of all teams. More than half are below Chicago State lol.

And by seasons end, even more will be because many are in leagues where they are out of their league and won’t win many more games after weak non conference games run out.

Article about Chicago State saving the WAC autobid.

The team was pretty good in 2013-14. They started out 4-1 in their first 5 WAC games, including a win over New Mexico State, the eventual tournament winner.

Chicago State was 4th in the WAC that first season, the Cougars highest mark before finances and enrollment took a toll and the Cougars athletics took a big dip.
