WMU at Northern Illinois
Tuesday 11/18 at 7pm on ESPN2. Weather looks to be a high of 45, and a low of 33. 10% chance of rain with light easterly wind at 6mph.
Western is coming off a huge win against Ohio giving us sole possession of first place with two weeks remaining. Northern Illinois won its second MAC game this season whoopin UMass 45-3 in Amherst.
Go Broncos!

I'm an implicit believer in this defensive unit.
This Macon kid is obviously a talent, but also very raw. We'll see how he does against a big boy pass rush.
Maintaining gap integrity and good linebacker eye discipline will be key. Keep him in the pocket and make him throw. Our secondary has been rock solid all season against any kind of downfield passing game.
We don't have to be great offensively. I think 24 points wins the game.

The ESPN dispute sucks. I’m going to do my one day Sling thing early in the day! It took me forever for the Ohio game.
On paper, this should be a go to work and do our job type game. But it seems like Dekalb is never a sure thing.

I know it's "lowly UMass" but this new QB (evidently was QB1 before he got injured) dropping 45 points on them is an eye-opener and should grab our attention. At least we have some tape on him now.
Not a guarantee, but there's a decent chance we clinch a MACC appearance with a win, and it'd be great to do this now instead of having everything ride on EMU, which always treats this game like their Super Bowl.
Nervousness is understandable among the fan base. We've taken a dump several times in DeKalb but nothing stings more than that 2019 game against a 4-7 NIU. Win that, we go MACC. We lost, so CMU went. That was rough.

"Being where we are right now - what is it, November 13th with two games left to play? That's like preseason rankings. You can wipe your nose with that. It doesn't matter. We have to finish strong ... I think our players understand that. I really like the mindset that they came in with yesterday after the game. They wanted look at the things that we could improve in in the Ohio game, and they were excited to really go play a Northern Illinois team who's had our number the last several years." - Lance Taylor

NIU crushed UMass, but taken in context, I am not worried.
UMass is suffering a historically bad season, even for them. And it continues to get worse. They've been ravaged by injuries, and I mean RAVAGED...like literally half of the roster is injured. And even when they were healthy they weren't that good.
NIU has given us trouble in the past, but this WMU team and this season feels different. I've never seen WMU defense like the one we have now. And with all the motivation, a MACC appearance on the line, playing for Kneeland, giving NIU the boot on their way out the door...I think WMU takes care of business.

I had no idea about all those injuries. Good context.
Also, UMass led Buffalo but lost in the last minute a few weeks ago. Wonder if that destroyed whatever left of confidence they had.

Contain NIU QB and limit the RB...
Most importantly... MOVE THE BALL ON OFFENSE... show some sort of creativity with getting the ball down field... the QB sneak up middle... Run RB up middle.. Then another QB fake out up middle ... all for 3 yards... STOP IT.

However, all that up the middle has worn down defenses so we are able to move it and finish teams in the 4th. Plus we seem to do something different in the biggest of plays which has to have teams guessing. It’s not a pretty brand by any means but we’re first place in the MAC

Both NIU and emu seem to be improving each week.
Gonna be no easy last two games.

RE: WMU at Northern Illinois
It'd be so great if we win out, but it'll be a challenge. Both road games, on wonky Tuesday nights, to locations where we've struggled to close the deal before. Though even if we split, it's hard to see a scenario where we wouldn't be one of the two teams to Detroit, where the only schools we could tie are CMU (we won), Ohio (we won), Toledo (we won), Miami (we lost) and Buffalo (didn't play). And Miami and Buffalo play each other so one will be out.
I don't want to leave it up to EMU. They get extra "up" for us to begin with, so want to avoid giving them a chance to play spoiler. So hoping we take care of business tomorrow.
We are 6.5 favorites at the moment.
Forecast shows rain earlier in the day Tuesday in DeKalb, but should be ended well before our game. Typically raw November evening around 40.

Sounds like a normal November MAC game at NIU. Not sure about tomorrow’s wind forecasts but it can be brutal in Dekalb. Could be a factor in the game…but we’ll see I guess.

Also Miami is now QB-less and Buffalo has looked very not good for the last month, barely squeaking by UMass and Kent.

Finn should have to give back some of his nil money Miami paid him.

If we lose this game the tiebreakers will not fall in our favor. Toledo and Miami will advance to the MACC should those two teams win their last two games.

RE: WMU at Northern Illinois
I’m oddly excited to watch this game tomorrow.
I’m also nervous. I’m confident we are the better team, but we have a history up there that is problematiic. It will be a tough game.
On the other hand, we’ve had whole string of tough games and held up to the pressure. The boys are tried and tested. So that’s a plus. And I think this one is a little personal for LT. That is a plus IMO.
