So... how are we going to buy things with cash without pennies? I'm mostly talking about when you receive change from the cashier... we're going to make everything in $.05 increments?

If your purchase comes out to $1.03, it rounds up to $1.05.

If your purchase comes out to $1.02, it rounds down to $1.00.

it's scary how easy it is to price something at x when one knows the tax rate to either end with a 5 or a 0 ... c'mon, mayun ... 03-lmfao03-drunk03-lmfao

if digi, you can count to the penny w/o losing a winks sleep...

regardless, the round-up has begun ... 03-wink

They just quit making pennies, they aren't getting rid of the ones that already exist. There are enough in circulation that they can kick that can down the road for decades at least.

stores will stop accepting .. yeah, I know it's illegal due to being legal tender, but nobody is gonna give a fk...

it's hard enough to time when to bust a hundo if less than a 20 buck purchase ... such is when playing in the field of tangible...

Which is why the US Mint is discontinuing them. It costs over 4 cents to make each penny.

I think the nickel might be next, at some point in the future.

Yep, every time someone hands you a penny you lost 3 cents.

I know PetSmart and Dollar Tree actually do that .

Dollar Tree gives to the Boys & Girls Club and PetSmart to ASPCA.

I know some other places do that as well, but I had forgotten about those two. Thanks for reminding me. (And for once, considering that the penny is now dead, I actually agree with something Red Wing Helmet Dude said.)

Never rounds down. And the extra few cents adds up to a substantial amount for the state that they would not have gotten otherwise. It’s really simple math.

I've got enough pennies saved up in one of those big clear plastic coke bottles to keep the economy running for about a nanosecond. Think I'm going to head over a coin machine and get rid of them soon.

I don't know, if they're pre-1982, they have a lot of copper in them. Clean copper is going for over 3 bucks a pound now.

My younger brother has a 1995 Chevy pickup that he's barely driven in 20 years sitting in his driveway. It still runs. He still cranks it up about once a week, and he'll drive it around the block sometimes. This is a truck that restorers are looking for everywhere, but he won't sell it, and he won't fix it back up even though the body is as straight as the day it rolled off the assembly line.

Instead, he uses it as a receptacle for scrap copper. He works for a cabling company, so he ends up with a lot of scrap Cat5 and Cat6 cabling. That stuff isn't worth nearly as much as cleaned electrical wiring, though. I don't know where he comes up with it, but he probably has about 500 pounds of it sitting in his garage.

So that is the guy that has been taking down the networks! Seriously copper theft is a big issue in telecom, and it is getting worse. We have outages all the time because some dumb*** cuts down a main fiber cable thinking it has copper in it.
