Marine Corps 250th Birthday
Least I forget.

Doing a little bow hunting in the snow before I clean up and head to a local Marine Corps 250th Birthday party this evening.

That's a lot of candles for the traditional cake.

Thanks to all the Marines out there. Semper Fi, and hope for 250 more.

I love the first 7 minutes of "Full Metal Jacket" - click on the image for the full movie, which is unfortunately missing on various popular streaming platforms.

Congrats to the USMC on 250. I had my Navy 250 a few weeks ago.

So now we've had the Army, Navy and Marine Corps 250s. Anybody left? I think the Coast Guard, and of course the AF, came along much later.

Knee High Navy had their 235th in the summer. Our AmVets post has a party for each birthday every year. Excuse to do a big cookout and potluck at the bar.

RE: Marine Corps 250th Birthday
My oldest son is a Lifer Marine retiree who served in Iraq, my youngest son was a Security Police in the Air Force who was with the UN Peace Keepers in Bosnia, my grandson just finished his tour as a policeman too. I served in the Viet Nam war working on the EB-66 Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron Phase Dock and also with the Navy Reserve who got to work at Navy's Fightertown USA for 3 years during my two weeks training.

My extended family has at least one veteran in their midst. 100% American, 100% patriotic...and very proud of that.

Go USA!

If you are ever in battle, you would want the Marines to lead the charge.

I'm not saying there aren't any, but I've never met a crooked Marine, or a gutless one either for that matter! Semper Fi and may Corps live as long as, or longer than the planet!

We always go to the grade school middle school and high school on Veterans Day to give a talk.

I tell the high school kids, if you want, you get more out of the military than you put in.

Do your 6 years and be thoughtful about what you want to do.
Free healthcare for life.
Free college education:
Learn a trade to build a resume.

When you are 24 when you get out after one contract you'll have $$ in the bank, no debt, a car, a career waiting for you, a VA loan for a home purchase...

Some of them get it.

I've met 1, but only 1. He was Irish, and in order to not get deported after getting a DUI and attacking the arresting officers he agreed to join the Marines. He did serve overseas, and did so heroically. But he got back and ended up going back to being a drunk, cheated on his wife, and pretty much deserted her and his child. It was pretty bad.

He did serve overseas, and did so heroically. But he got back and ended up going back to being a drunk, cheated on his wife, and pretty much deserted her and his child. It was pretty bad.

The first Marine I ever met was on their pistol team and had survived Pork Chop Hill in Korea. Look it up sometime. One of my girlfriends in college lost her brother whom I knew in the bombing of the barracks in Beirut. He was a solid young man in every way. A man I did business with was a retired Drill Instructor from Paris Island. Most honest and toughest individual I've known. He hunted wild boar with nothing but a single shot Thompson .44 and a Bowle knife. I asked what the hell he thought the knife was for? He said if he missed with the .44 he and the hog had a fighting chance. When Ray was 60 he was running 10K every morning and still doing 100 sit-ups and pushups each. He hated liars and 2 of my competitors were literally shown the door for lying to him. I also had a sporting goods show annually for the Marines and dealt with them face to face. There was never an issue of any kind regarding how they conducted business. Since I also dealt with Army and Navy bases I can tell you that was unique.

Now to both you and Ollie, what is it about my initial post that you failed to understand. I said plainly that it was certainly possible there were some out there who weren't honest, and I also plainly said "that I had met". I judge people by how they behave and what I see them do or not do when they interact with others. I judge them by how they do or do not keep their word. I cannot speak for anyone I do not know. And I stand by my remarks. I've never had a problem personally with a Marine, or with their trustworthiness, and I've never met one who wasn't direct, or when faced with a challenge didn't meet it.

I have known liars and gutless people in all other walks of life. But those were of the people I've actually known, and in that group, I've never suffered a bad person who was also a Marine. The ones I've known were not choir boys, but neither were they liars or cheats where I was concerned. Ray was one of the most dedicated to his friends and honest individuals I ever did business with. He was both refreshing and inspiring in that regard.

RE: Marine Corps 250th Birthday
I'm not arguing with you at any level, jr. I hold all kinds of respect for all but the single Marine I mentioned above. I also judge people by my interactions and watching their interactions with others. That is why I don't paint groups with a single brush stroke... which of course got a handful of people here all fired up yesterday regarding my comments about Muslims.
