Two MLB Pitchers Indicted in Sports Betting and Money Laundering Conspiracy
Quote:BREAKING: DOJ has just indicted Cleveland Guardians pitchers Luis Ortiz and Emmanuel Clase for taking BRIBES to rig pitches for bettors

They allegedly “agreed in advance with co-conspirators on specific pitches they would throw in games.”

Sports betting is out of control.

This video is supposedly an instance of Ortiz intentionally throwing a ball after agreeing to do so with co-conspirators.

Clase has a 5 year, $20 MILLION contract with Cleveland. These people aren’t the brightest.

Quote:Two Cleveland Guardians pitchers have been federally indicted in for conspiring with with sports bettors by rigging pitches to win bets, for which they received kickbacks in some instances.

Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz “agreed in advance with their co-conspirators to throw specific types and speeds of pitches, and their co-conspirators used that inside information to place wagers on those pitches,” according to the indictment, which was filed on Wednesday.

“Hundreds of fraudulent bets” were placed on their pitches.

The bets were based on guessing pitches, including the speed and whether it would be called a ball or strike.

“With CLASE’s knowledge and approval, Bettor-I, Bettor-2, and other Bettors used this information to place over a hundred fraudulent Pitch Speed and Ball/HBP straight bets and parlays on CLASE’s pitches on the Betting Platforms,” the indictment alleges.

The New York Post reports that Ortiz was arrested in Boston on Sunday. Clase has not yet been arrested.

Both pitchers were placed on leave by the by the Major League Baseball in July amid a league investigation.

Per New York Post:

Clase, the Guardians’ All-Star closer, agreed to begin rigging prop bets around May 2023, and “at times received bribes and kickbacks.”

Ortiz joined the scheme in June of this year, per the indictment.

They are facing charges of wire fraud conspiracy, honest services wire fraud conspiracy, conspiracy to influence sporting contests by bribery and money laundering conspiracy.

More from Pablo Torres on X:

This comes after the arrest of more than 30 people across 11 states, including Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups and Miami Heat player Terry Rozier, as part of a takedown of a massive sports gambling ring, which included a poker scheme and “sports rigging.”

This FBI announced their investigation into the extensive gambling and sports betting ring tied to NBA stars and the La Cosa Nostra Italian Mafia last month.

The operation involved rigged games, allegedly using altered shuffling machines, X-ray tables to read cards face down, wireless devices, pre-marked cards, and chip tray analyzers.

This.

And this. Waiting for media to say exactly how much these 2 got paid for the 2025 season, including bonuses.

I lost interest in “major” professional sports a long time ago. I’ve never heard of these players and have no idea if they are good (compared to other MLB pitcher) or not. But stories like this just reinforce the idea that the whole thing is just another bullsh!t reality show to keep people amused between commercials.

Greedy mega millionaires. Incredible. Rest assured this is just the tip of the iceberg. I will be shocked if the NFL and college football aren’t touched by this along with more MLB and NBA players and personnel. They said the Mafia was dead…. But it isn’t.

A lot of this is organized crime compromising players and agents

Once they have the hook in you youre toast.

Its all wrastlin now... every single professional team sport is rigged.

...and the major college sports are in the same boat.

Add in the rule changes and pathetic evolution of the games being played, its all unwatchable

I think sharing revenue and allowing NIL should be deterrents to taking payments under the table in college. Not for all, obviously, but for most.

They let Ohtani get away with it. He was the first to get popped, but he was too big for the sport, so the interpreter took the fall.

That interpreter has a lifetime supply of hookers and blow. He gladly took the fall.

They have changed the rules on pass interference and holding now so that they can call it or not call it on nearly every play. Roughing the passer is pretty discretionary too, but that doesn't happen every play. And does anybody really understand what targeting is?

I have no doubt referees are compromised.
