James Williams: Possible ACC 2.0 article
Been very slow realignment news/rumor mill for the past couple of months.

Quote:In the next era of college athletics, the Atlantic Coast Conference faces a defining crossroads. Imagine a 2030 landscape where Clemson, Florida State, Miami, North Carolina, and perhaps even Louisville exit for richer pastures. Even in that scenario, the ACC is far too valuable — institutionally, academically, and geographically — to simply collapse.
He essentially has USF, UConn, Tulane, Memphis, Rice, Army and Navy as the backfill candidates.
What I found interesting in the article was factoring in what the future streaming companies might be looking for. The YouTube B1G realignment talkers have been saying the next B1G contract will have a streaming partner added to their group of networks (Fox, CBS, NBC). Selling their subscriptions in the college football crazed south is what their media partners want; either by scheduling agreements or brick and mortar expansion (GT, Miami). Supposedly OSU has all the support to bring in who they want this round after the buckeyes heavily supported the public capital deal that would have helped out many B1G programs not named Michigan or USC. They also think the SEC missed their window to grab Virginia as the political elections supposedly will put people on the Board of Visitors less preferable to towards the sec.
Anyway, that’s about all the rumors I remember hearing lately. If you got anything, share below.

If what most say the networks want (large football viewing audiences) then I seriously doubt that there will remain as much interest in Virginia as some may think. They simply don't draw large ratings or have a stable viewing audience for their own part. The absolutely make sense for a market, but markets more and more are measured only in actual viewers. North Carolina is better at drawing interest, but we'll see. Clemson, Miami and FSU can easily draw 3 million on their own when winning (which isn't as frequent as it used to be).
I don't see Memphis in the ACC rebuild. Tulane and UConn seem more likely. But I think the author is fooling himself.
Maybe the Big Ten shows some interest but Duke and Georgia Tech while strong in research don't draw the eyes their investors will be looking to get. Oddly Stanford can if winning. If they take one more to the West they'll save spot #20 for Notre Dame the only school they can add and cover the cost of 2 schools by taking them.
The SEC could take the two football brands in Clemson and FSU and still make enough from Miami and North Carolina if they wished.
We'll see. But I don't see the rebuilt ACC being part of the new Super 2.

The five schools tOSU liked were UNC, uva, GT, Miami and Stanford. tOSU is only interested in schools that meet B1G standards on day one, supposedly. Utah has an untapped market that consumes lots of advertiser products; school is an interesting option for the B1G. Some kind of super league or breakaway or segregation of the P2 seems to be in the cards for 2030ish if the speculation ever evolves. Heck, one of the reasons Arkansas increased their football spending from 14th to top 7 in the SEC is they need to remain a viable option for whatever actually happens in the early 30’s with the TV deals.
