Schiff, better militarys have "flown" over US warships before. This isn't even something to worry about...unless Maduro is stupid enough to strike first. I think Trump would be elated if Maduro did strike first, it would give him the justifiable reason to destroy Maduro first and then the military. Remember that the US has the capabilities that Israel has like hitting a threat through a window. Maduro better watch it, he might just see one heading his way and that's the last thing he'll ever see.

There's been a lot of Venezuelan propaganda about their military might on Facebook recently. I think they're trying to scare us. OOOOoooooh, we're quaking in our boots. They would lose in a week what Maduro destroyed in years, his country. Other way around. Our oil is actually mostly light sweet, but most of our refineries were designed to handle heavier South American/Mexican crude. We also dont import "the vast majority" of oil that we use. We are actually oil independent (we are a net exporter---producing more than we use), but we need to import some of the heavier crude to mix with the domestic crude in order to create a mix that our refineries can deal with. So we are only importing enough to create the correct mix.

Yes, we are independent 'volume wise'. Not use wise.

And the oil we dont process -- we export out. And typically that is offset by an amount that we can refine straight out, in addition to the mixing amount you cite above.

And it is correct that the net domestic production out roughly is equal to net foreign production in. And depending on the year and worldwide economy, on a volume basis we typically ship out more volume than bring in.

The refining issue keeps the United States in a 'not' independent status (i.e. all aspects clearly not dependent on foreign imports). If the US could build refining capacity too actually refine the bulk of the US production, we could actually hit oil independence in every aspect.
