Allow me to rant for just a moment on Herschel Walkers NFL career.
Herschel Walker should have threatened to break Walter Paytons rushing record. He was one of the most underutilized players in NFL history for a multitude of reasons and situations.
He initially went to the USFL and ran for 5500 yards in just 3 seasons (INSANE!). When the USFL folded he ended up in Dallas and split time with Tony Dorsett for 2 years. Finally in 1988 he was the sole RB and ran for 1500 years on a 3-13 team (unheard of). Then Jerry Jones bought the Cowboys and the famous trade happened in 1989 that built the cowboys dynasty.
Here is where his misuse really began. Herschel was a power I formation RB and the vikes ran a single back system where they rotated RB's. It was not only the biggest heist in NFL history, it was strategically the dumbest on the field move of all time. He did not remotly fit their system, they were too stupid to change systems to fit him and to top it off he shared time with lesser RB's.
3 years later he was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles. This should have been a dream situation with him at RB and Randall Cunningham at QB, but the Eagles had one of the stupidest head coaches of all time, Rich Kotite. They started off doing it right and ran Herschel out of that power I in 1992 and went 4-0 including a big MNF 31-7 beatdown of the soon to be world champion Dallas Cowboys. For some inexplicable reason they began to abandon the strategy that got them off to a 4-0 as a power run team and morphed back into their old offense and Walkers touches became very inconsistent the rest of the year. They went 7-5 the rest of the way and got creamed in the playoffs by the Cowboys.
1992 was the end of Walkers time as a featured RB, from there he was a pro bowl caliber kick returner for 5 more years. But even as late as 1995 and 1996 you would see flashes of his abilities that were still there even well into his mid 30's.
The sad part is in 1989 he was almost traded to the Cleveland Browns who actually used a run first power ruining offense that Herschel likely would have had mutiple 2000 yard seasons in. But the Vikings offered all those draft picks as compensation if they players they dealt Dallas were cut so Jimmy Johnson jumped all over that retarded trade offer.
If he had went straight to the NFL instead of the USFL and landed on a decent team he very likely would have ended up with 18000+ rushing yards.
