The NFL Needs an Improved Overtime, 40-40 doesn't cut it
I thought the 40-40 tie between Green Bay and Dallas was an awful way to end an otherwise good game. Perhaps push the overtime to 12 minutes so that teams will be more likely to go for touchdowns?

Obviously, this is different than some of the other tie games that were 16-16 or 20-20 and kind of clunkers. Still, overtime brings the casual fans out. I am neither a fan of Green Bay or Dallas, and the game was exciting, yet the ending was a real killjoy.

College football got rid of ties and fixed overtime. Why can't the NFL?

I think this idea has been brought up before on this board.

Whoever scores first in the game, and only for the first score, gets one tenth of point added to its score. That way, the game can't end in a tie, (unless it ends in a zero-zero score, and that never happens)

So far example, if team a scores first with a TD and kicks an extra point, the team will have 7.1 points.

I wonder if going to a points system that awarded 3 for a win, 1 for a tie, and 0 for a loss would fix this. It would narrow the gap between a tie and a loss, give a greater award for a win, and perhaps encourage more risk-taking in regulation.

Postseason games could still have a college football-style overtime.

I get the attitude of being against a tie in the NFL, but they had too many games where whomever wins the coin toss got the eventual field goal to win it. Thus, locking the other team out of a chance to tie it based on a simple coin flip.

In the Rams vs. 49ers, I am glad the Rams went for it. However, running into Fred Warner's gap on 4th and 1 is not what I had in mind!

Rams have no excuse to lose that game with how banged up the 49ers are. They were sloppy all game long. The fumble in the first half was preventable, he just took his eyes off the ball. The fumble at the goal line was really crazy because the had the ball wrapped up with two hands, then dropped his second hand in traffic for no good reason. The missed FG was somewhat forgivable as it was a long one from 50/50 range, but the blocked extra point was lazy blocking in my mind.

I don't think San Francisco was the better team, but they wanted it more, and they were more focused.

For a long, long time there was roughly a 50/50 chance whoever won the coin toss in OT would win the game. Then it changed in recent decades to favor the coin toss winner.

Part of me wishes they would just go back to the simple sudden death system. Fair or not, I dot care. The teams had 60 minutes of regulation time to determine the winner. You don't like the OT rules, then win the fricken game in regulation time.

I mean...

you have OT in the college football, college basketball, NBA, NHL, extra innings in MLB, +time in Soccer....

I don't like seeing a tie....

But I think as far as the NFL goes, with kickers able to make 60 yarders now... the winner of the coin toss can be the winner of the game a lot of times depending on if the defense can force a 3 and out OR block a kick.

I'm fine with ties. Better than silly tiebreak rules like the colleges 2 point plays.
