Per ESPN.com

Quote:Auburn offensive coordinator Bob Petrino will be named Louisville's next head football coach at a 6 p.m. ET news conference later today, replacing John L. Smith.

Petrino is expected to stay and coach the Auburn defense against Penn State in the Capital One Bowl in Orlando on Jan. 1.

Smith resigned to take the job at Michigan State after coaching the Cardinals in the GMAC Bowl last week. Petrino coached under Smith at both Louisville and Utah State.

Petrino, 41, served as an assistant coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars for three seasons (1999-2001) and was offensive coordinator his final year with the NFL franchise.

In addition to his one season at Louisville, he was an assistant coach at six other schools: Carroll College (1983, 1985-86), Weber State (1984, 1987-88), Idaho (1989-91), Arizona State (1992-93), Nevada (1994) and Utah State (1995-97).

Central Florida head coach Mike Kruczek, Vikings offensive coordinator Scott Linehan and South Carolina offensive coordinator Charlie Strong were also contenders for the Louisville job.
