If Putin thinks he is going to play Trump in a stall game he might find out it won't be to his liking.
But isn't Trump a Russian agent and a Putin's puppet? Someone in this thread even said as much. (And that person has proven to be an ideological lightweight time and time again.)
Never was. That’s idiotic talking points coming from haters. The same cast of clowns who say this wouldn’t cheer if he cured cancer.

In lieu of the British and French-led coalition regarding Ukraine falling apart, I felt bumping this thread was at least somewhat relevant. Think of it as a way to (at least in part) answer the question, "how did we get here?"
You're welcome, everybody.

RE: Trump to Zelenskyy: "You're gambling with World War III!"
Just so the left knows I'm not a Russian agent (not that I would be one because, well, I love this country too damn much to even consider being an agent of a foreign entity), Putin had instituted a cease fire during Easter, and Russia (you know, the country he's in charge of running since he's its president) violated it. (Both sides are accusing the other of violating it. No surprise there.)

Trump administration warns it could walk away from Russia-Ukraine ceasefire talks

Vice President JD Vance told reporters in India that the U.S. had offered Russia and Ukraine "a very explicit proposal" to end the war that has been ongoing for over three years: make a deal or risk the U.S. walking away.
"We've issued a very explicit proposal to both the Russians and Ukrainians, and it's time for them to either say yes or for the U.S. to walk away from this process. We've engaged in an extraordinary amount of diplomacy, of on-the-ground work," Vance told reporters.
The vice president also said that "the only way to really stop the killing is for the armies to both put down their weapons, to freeze this thing and to get on with the business of actually building a better Russia and a better Ukraine."
Vance’s comments come after Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that he would not be attending talks in London aimed at facilitating a ceasefire. On Tuesday, State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce told reporters that Rubio would not be attending the talks due to "logistical issues."
The secretary later wrote in a post on X that he was planning on "following up after the ongoing discussions in London and rescheduling my trip to the UK in the coming months."
During Tuesday’s briefing, Bruce also said Gen. Keith Kellogg, special presidential envoy for Ukraine, would represent the U.S. at the talks in London.
On Friday, Rubio suggested that the U.S. might walk away from negotiations to end the war within "a matter of days," despite President Donald Trump’s ongoing efforts to secure a ceasefire deal. Trump later told the press that Rubio was "right in saying that we want to see it end."
"Think about it, every day a lot of people are being killed as we talk about, you know, as they play games, so we’re not gonna take that," Trump told reporters. He also said he thinks the U.S. has a "good chance" of bringing peace to Ukraine and Russia.
So that's the latest. Oh, and BUMP, Y'ALL!

Who would have guessed that Trumps plan to surrender Ukraine to Russia might not be the brilliant 24 hour solution he thought it was? For a so called master deal maker to fail this badly in his first big foriegn policy move shows he never even bothered to learn the details. Anyone with a clue knew this would never fly.
Giving Russia everything they want was never going to solve the war. First---Ukraine would rather fight on with no US help than surrender. Secondly---immediately granting all of Russia's demands before negotiations even officially started---not only failed to win their agreement----but instead only emboldened the Russians to add to their list of demands. Even Trump in the "Art of Deal" says you never give up something for nothing. Trump blew this one big time. Maybe he can salvage it---but I suspect its going to be hard for anyone to take him seriously on this issue after this joke of an effort. I would not be surprised if China decides moving on Taiwan during Trumps term is the most advantageous timing---even if they are not as prepared as they would prefer.
The up side for the US is we are now out of Ukraine and can direct our defense department resources elsewhere. The down side is China is likely now convinced that when push comes to shove on Taiwan---Trump will not fight. Is that assumption correct? Who knows? What I do know is that when it comes to deterring a Pacific war---it doesnt really matter if that assumption is correct. The only thing that really matters is if China believes Trump wont fight---and I suspect current and recent events are likely convincing China that is the case. Frankly, after Biden abandoning Afghanistan, Trump starting trade wars with allies, and Trump now abandoning Ukraine---China has every reason to believe Trump---is all bluster and unlikely to bite when push comes to shove. And even if Trump does "bite"---his ability to create a coalition is minimal because there is little reason for Pacific nations to trust Trump will stick around when the going gets tough. Deterring China without allies or forward bases will make it much more difficult for the US to effectively fight so far away. Given the current world trajectory----we had better be making our own high end chips and our own medicines within 2 years or we could be in big trouble.

I agree. This is the one thing Trump has fumbled badly. Especially after all the braggadocio about ending this in one day. His threats and ‘stick’ don’t carry the same weight any longer. After telling Putin not to invade in his first term or he would blow up the minarets in Moscow to now attempting to convince Ukraine to surrender Ukrainian ground the Russians don’t even control is a show of weakness.
The Ukrainians want to fight on without our financial and equipment assistance. They have exceeded all predictions of defeat as long as they have the ammunition and US intelligence. But if Trump cuts off intelligence aid, that would be a sign that something else is going on. And I do not want to even consider what the reason for that would be.

How do we look at Trump’s new commercial bragging about how tough he is on Russia? I’m stunned actually. This Ukraine saga is bringing out some bizarre behavior. I really hope we can get this behind us before it does some real damage to Trump’s main agendas.

And for that reason, keeping the USD as the world's recerve currency should be a major part of foreign policy. And running huge deficits and debt areprobably the major threat to that status.

It's economic at the moment. Taiwan and South Korea announced new plants here really quickly after the tariff announcements. It's not because of tariffs. It's so we can make weapons here if China invades them.

The problem is Trump doesnt really understand WHY the dollar is the worlds currency. Its not backed by gold. Its not backed by silver, oil, or any other commodity. Its not because of our economy---as the world economy is roughly 4 times the size of the US economy. The real reason the dollar is the worlds currency is because the US military stands behind the dollar and the rules based order the dollar represents. People are growing tired of being the worlds policeman (I am too)----but that is EXACTLY the reason the dollar is the world reserve currency. The moment you get a multi-polar world---then the currency of any nation that enforces "order" in a given region will quickly become the default "reserve currency" for that region. Thats just how the world works. Its also the reason we need to reshore heavy industry. You cant successfully fight a modern industrialized war if you cant build more ships, planes, and tanks than your enemies (that was the real lesson from WWII).

The thing with that though is, Taiwan and S Korea will have to bring their own employees to work at these plants because we don't have a workforce anymore. Personally, I don't have a problem with that at all because they won't be joining any stupid unions.

RE: Trump to Zelenskyy: "You're gambling with World War III!"
I had a discussion with a liberal colleague last week. Yes, I realize that's nearly impossible to have but the topic was "who's going to work in those factory jobs if they come back?". His point was that we don't have the workers. My point was that yes we do.
My argument was that I see countless people working retail, convenient stores, fast food, and on and on who 40 yrs ago would have been working in factories and the college kids and high school kids back then would dominate those services jobs but now those jobs are filled with people older than college kids because they had no other choice in order to try to support their families.
A 30 or 40 year old man working at the local McDonalds would much rather work a factory job with better pay and benefits but those jobs are mostly gone l, thus went the American middle class.
