At the Tulsa game, there was a booth for "Team Torrey Ward," manned by his mom, longtime UAB employee Janice Ward, as well as Torrey Jr. They were handing out flyers and raising support for their fund-raiser to provide athletic shoes for K-12 kids in need.
By the way, Torrey, Jr. was a standout WR for Helena High School football this season. UAB recruited him some, but he told me the coaches wanted him to play tight end and he wants to play wideout. He is going to play at Samford in the fall. He seems to be an outstanding young man, following in the footsteps of his dad (and his grandmom too).
For those who don't know, Torrey Ward, Sr. was a great basketball player under Murry Bartow at UAB in the late 1990's. He played professionally overseas, and later was an assistant coach for AK at Ole Miss. He was the assistant head coach at Illinois State, when he died in a plane crash in 2015 on his way home from the Final Four in Indianapolis.
